    power pole charge

Ive looked for more info on this as ive seen a couple post in threads about the charger shutting down in colder temperatures but havent seen must discussion on it... Planning on getting the charge but that would be an issue if winters a problem.. is there an issue with charging during winter or is that just with lithium? Whats the resolution if you dont have your boat in a heated garage?

    Thanks

My charge hasn’t had any issues in the cold and honestly I haven’t heard of it anywhere prior. But my boat goes in the garage when it close to freezing and it’s usually above 32 degrees in the garage. Also I only charge when it’s warmer than 32 degrees due to me running lithium batteries. I try my best to not recharge my lithiums when the internal temp of them is close to freezing.

so what do guys do up north? just dont run lithium unless they have a way to keep the boat in ideal temps, because i know they have to fish lots when temps are low 20s to low 30s..

One of the advantages of the charge is that it WONT charge when the temp is below freezing. Most of the lithium's don't have low temp cutoff so having it on the charger is nice.

A lot of times the temps don’t get to 20 degrees until early in the morning before the sun rises. Usually it’s warmest when getting off the water around sun set say 7pm and 40 degrees. Then as the night goes on say 2am it’s down to 30 degrees. Usually if you are off the water around 7pm your batteries have 5-6 hours of charge time on them before it reaches freezing temps so they are typically fully charged by then. Also based on my battery app even when it says on my truck that the temp is 30 degrees the internal battery temp is usually warmer than that say 36 degrees.

Also most lithiums are safe to charge at like 5-10amps at freezing temps. It’s unsafe for you to charge at say 20amps below 32f. Some will even allow a 1-5amp charge in below 0 temps. So check your specs and from what toporanger said about the charge not even working below 32degrees is news to me. I guess it goes to show I haven’t tried to charge my batteries when it was truly under 32 degrees.

IMPORTANT! The chart to the right shows shutofftemperatures for different batterieswired to CHARGE™. This applies toall CHARGE™ functions (AC, FishingMode, and Charge on the Run).

    Lead-Acid -4°F (-20°C) to 122°F (50°C)AGM -4°F (-20°C) to 122°F (50°C)Gel -4°F (-20°C) to 122°F (50°C)Lithium 32°F (0°C) to 113°F (45°C)

This is off the power pole charge owners manual. I was looking at the abyss batteries and they come with built in heater. 22lbs less then dakota like battery....very pricey though... Guess it depends to what the charge is getting its temperature from.
