The flatheads in SML love to eat DT6’s this time of year, totally inedible and slime up your boat.

Curious why they are inedible? I've eaten flathead before and found it excellent? Not sure I'd want to eat a real old one... But what I've had fileted from younger fish, especially before water gets too hot have been great.

I have found small flatheads are the best tasting catfish. Big ones taste like mud.

We usually toss anything much over 6-7 lbs back ( any catfish ) trimming away the bloodline on the older fish is essential and keeping all catfish alive and healthy until you are ready to prepare them is really the key. Flatheads really are probably the most active predator of all the American catfish species, so their diet would seem more suited to being good eating. At least that's my theory... I enjoy them.

We take aluminum boat up to the mouth of the river, get out & wade the shoals @ the River. Made our first trip this weekend. Not a single person on the River. Biggest was 12lb flathead. All channels & flatheads. Ended up with 16lbs of dressed/filets.
When cleaned properly they eat as good as any of them. Get all of the red out. This is from an 8lb Blue. IMG_9671.jpeg

I think most that fish for catfish use the same type of baits, tackle, locations. Trophy 50# plus Cats are caught by the guy's that use a different approach in methods and locations.
