What’s the magic tilt angle to prevent smoking in startup?

2022 Mercury PROXS 200 (serial number in signature below). I’ve only got about 10 hours in the motor so far and the Oil level is dead on what the Mercury manual states it should be. I’ve generally bumped the trim up for 3 seconds from being fully down after I shut down the motor to fish. Still smokes at next startup. Honestly, I’m pretty sure fully down position produces fewer startups with no smoke but I need to double check that before I say that’s for sure what’s happening.

what does everyone else do to prevent startup oil smoke? How much do you guys trim up?

Mine just picks and chooses when it does it, I’ve tried so many angles and it seems to make no noticeable difference, some days never, others once or twice. Long fast runs maybe worse than shorter ones. I’m at a bit over 100 hrs now

Mine seems to like just a slight trim maybe trimmed at 1/8 trim. If I leave it all the way down or trimmed to high it smokes.

I’ll have to try a small bump and all the way down next time I’m out to see what it does.

I set it near the top of the trim range and never get smoke, but it is a v6 175

I usually have it at 2 on my gauge and full trim for my rig is 6.5. It's a finally a habit now.

thinking about... It's been awhile since I went full throttle, and mine has not smoked in the last few trips on start up. I never trim up b4 ignition off, unless its shallow.

Set mine at the top of the trim rams right where it changes to tilt and mine never smokes when set there..2020 Pro XS 300 4s..

This is the correct procedure, as soon as you shut it down go to full TRIM, and leave it there while you fish. It will stop smoking on start up. I always trim down some before start up. Mine is a 300R.

Thx guys. I guess I may not be trimming it up high enough. Will try your method next time out.

Check out the FAQ Section on oil level. FULL MARK is not the correct level.

Simply place the engine at a POSITIVE trim angle. Exact number of degrees isn't particularly critical, just that the anti-ventilation plate be higher in the back than in the front.
