Holding screws into top cap under rubrail

Guys been working on the boat restoration, and one of the projects I’ve been meaning to do is tighten up the screws under my rubrail. It seem every year I get 4 or 5 that back out and I gotta pry to rubrail insert to fix them. This year I’m gonna take the while insert out and squirt some 4200 or 5200 in there and put the screws back in.

Which one would you guys use?? I know the 5200 is permanent, but let’s face it….my boat is a 1997. If I ever need to separate the top cap from the bottom cap, it’s probably going to the boat graveyard. Give me your alls opinions and why or why not to use which product.

    Thank you.

Some folks say they pound toothpicks with glue into the holes. Some rub rails (mine) have a good old fashioned piece of wood for the screws to go in to.

I have one screw that likes to back out on the passenger, side about mid boat... but it takes it about a year to do it. So once a year it seems (just did it last week, in fact), I pry out the rubrail and screw that sucker back in. I never thought to use some 4200... Next year, I'm on it :).

use 4200 on the ss screws. No telling how many broken rivets I've taken out of boats over the years.

The top cap and hull are normally screwed together. Early in the composite days the screws wouldn't grab the composit strip that was being used in the hull. Engineers eventually came out with a strip of composit that heated up like wood and melted around the screw. If you have a lot coming out I'd use 4200. That area has a lot of flex.

As for the boats alluded to above. At least one manufacturer seal the top cap and hull together and then vacuum's the two parts together pulling all the excess resin out. That makes a solid hull, but you will pay dearly for a repair if they ever need to be separated. Everything is a trade off.

4200, bigger screws, or plastic anchors: your choice
