    spinning reel problem

Set up a spinning reel with fifteen-pound braid and after a few cast I had a big birds nest come come off the spool. Thought I had to much line so after off that gob i was back in business but the same thing happened.
Before I respool does anyone know what the problem may be.

You are not spooling with enough tension on the line.

Thanks for the reply but I had made forty or so cast before I had the first birds nest.

That's the time it takes for the line to dig in under the softer layers and to suddenly comme out in a big mess.

Next time on the boat let it all out with a small shallow diving crankbait with the trolling motor running then reel it back in..........keeps a nice tension on the line and forgot to say put a swivel on the bait.........takes care of some of the line twist too.

You are getting a loose loops in your spool and then reeling line in overtop of it. Make sure you are closing the bail by hand and after every cast you strip a few feet of line off the spool by hand - this seats the line properly so that won't happen.

This. Get in the habit of closing the bail by hand.

Agree with others close bail by hand and pick up the slack before starting to wind in.

Line is not stacking properly. The crank bait trick will correct that. Dan

Line is fifteen pound braid and I always flip the bail over by hand.

Either overspooled and/or you aren't stripping a few feet of line under a tight drag after each cast - that's critical. Its the loose line laying on the spool that's causing the problem and making sure its tight by stripping it against the drag under tension so that its tight solves that. Also make sure you spooled your line tightly enough when you first put it on.

You should do this every time regardless of line used.

Just troll the line behind the boat with nothing tied on, do this everytime after putting new line on and every so often when ideling thru no wake zones.

Trolling with nothing on occasionally will get the twist out. Crank bait is cast a crank bait out and leave bail open while trolling away to let out a bunch of line. Then reel in the crank bait to use it to keep the line winding tight

Thanks for all the suggestions and again I always flip the bail over by hand. What I did discover is sometimes the bail will not completely snap back level and the line will stack up on the top of the spool.
Now I need to figure out how to fix that.
