You need to have a heading sensor and calibrate the LS that way you get the indicator top right on screen
other than that he would have to physically look and see what direction its pointed

On networked GPSMAP units, I never got the beam icon to show up on networked units until I hooked up NMEA. Seems that data is treated like heading data and is sent over NMEA.

Leonard the beam icon is useless anyway unless you can tell me how it is used on the LS screen
It's usually best for the person in the back of the boat just to follow the lead of the one in front. Cast where they cast.
