1996 188 DC
My uncle has a 1996 188 DC that he just re-powered with a new 2023 Mercury 175hp Pro XS 4 stroke. The dealership put a Tempest Plus 3 blade 25 pitch on the motor and the hole shot is absolutely horrible. Has anyone else re-powered this boat and what prop is working best? Thanks in advance!

How does it run once you get past hole shot? I would think you need to be in 23-24 pitch range.

If it’s a 1996 it’s a 186 model. That prop is way too big for a 175 4 stroke (the 250 4 strokes are using the 25p). I would talk to the dealer and drop down in pitch.

It runs great once it breaks over. It is running about 67 mph.

You are right. It is a 186.

Does it blow out real bad on holeshot or bog?

sounds like since it runs fine after the hole shot that you just need to put a plug in one of the vent holes or a partial plug. you can get the plugs at any dealer or order online, there are a lot of videos on youtube that explain the process and how to do it. I run a 191 with a 3 blade tempest and its great. the plugs will have nothing to do or affect your top end, hole shot only
Good luck!

I run a 23 Temptest worked by Croxton on my 187 with a 175 EFI.

Don't know crap about props but I run a 25M Yamaha on my 186 with a 150 efi. The hole shot and top end are excellent
