1992 Champion 190 SCR with 200 mercury EFI

I have been helping a friend out to get his old Champion 190 or 191? It is the 19 foot wide body single console. I’m helping him get it back in shape. Started out with the motor by replacing all of the hoses filters, rebuilding the fuel pump, plugs, coil wires, and having the ECU repaired by Simon as well. The motor runs great now! His tilt tube was worn and motor mounts were shot out. Recently replaced it with bobs solid mounts and replaced the tilt tube. We also removed his old 6” jackplate and replaced it with a TH 10” and added a bobs transom plate. Resealed his transom cap and replaced a few live well hoses and took care or the live well overflow leak. Fitting was cracked and the boat would take on 3-5 gallons of water during each trip. Now we have been working on the jackplate height. I originally set it to 3.75” bellow the pad, but we had to go down from there several times. The boat seems to like 4.5-4.75” below pad. He has a tempest 25”, a trophy 25” and a Yamaha 25m. The Yamaha 25” is on it now. He has not topped it out yet due to his learning curve. The boat has lots of lift and bow lift now and starts to chine walking around 56-57mph. His boat used to run flat and barely had any lift before and topped out at 60 mph. I have been helping him with the driving and set up. It took me a while to learn how to balance my Allison on pad. I told him it will be a few months before he can get the hang of driving his champion now.

Once he gets the "feel", there will be a big smile on his face. Helped a friend put a 200 E-Tec HO on his 190. Took him a while, but you couldn't get that smile off his face. His 190 had a 150 FastStrike on it before we changed it out. His 190 also topped out at about 60-62mph with the 150 FastStrike.

Try your 26 Trophy on his 190. How does the Champ run with you driving it?

Best GPS on his 1994 190SCR, 200 E-Tec HO 3.3ltr, worked 26 Tempest+ @ 3.5" below the pad, was 74+mph. Two of us, tournament loaded on a long run on Lake Champlain. I must say, it was not all that much fun without a console in front of you.

IMHO, a 10" setback is too much for a 190. I believe Pat used to say 8" setback, 25M Yamaha prop, 3.5" below pad is the right setup.

6" is what the factory put on them, 8" is the max recommended. A Tempest 25 will probably provide the best performance and just a FYI there were no wide bodies in 1992. Those hulls have a 86" beam hull.

I have not driven his boat, letting him get the feel for it. As far as wide body, guess it is a normal 19 foot single console. I assumed it was a wide body. We are going to try the other two props shortly. I put a 10” on it because the boat has very little lift and seemed like it plowed water. He had his old jackplate 6” set too high so we set it to the lowest setting which was 3.25 below pad. It was still too high and the cable ratchet system was frozen. Decided to get a new TH marine jackplate. Seems to run pretty good with the 10” and hopefully it will work. Thanks for all the tips. I’ll post his numbers, rpm, slip on this post later. Transom is still solid and no flex or stress cracks. I also wet sanded and buffed his boat out. It is looking pretty sharp. Needs new carpet and some seats. He is actually pretty excited and said his boat feels like a different animal.

I had a 10 inch on my 97-191 with a 200. It ran great. Trim it high and let it fly.

If it is a 92' then it should be a 190. I thought the 190 was the first wide body. A Bill Pace design. Right? 91" beam? Reggie?

When I think of wide beam, its the 2001 and later models, 188, 196, 198, 206, 210 etc . except for the 203's and a few others .

Here is what his top cap looked like, I did not wet sand and buff the area next to his rod locker. I’ll hit those spots when we recarpet his boat.

My '93 190 definitely was not a wide body model.

This is from Pat in his thread pinned at the top of this forum...

"Porthouse bought champion from Storie in the early 90's, and had John continue to run the company for several years.
John wanted nothing to do with building anything besides the tried and proven 86" beamed boats. Bill Pace is the one who designed and built the first wide champ, the 190."

That woul have been in 1990. Now, it may not be a "wide body" as most of us have used the term, but it wasn't 86 inches.

And when I bought my 201 in 1994, my buddy bought a first year 191. It was definitely wider than my sled. In fact, 1994 was the last year of the 86 inch hulls. I bought my 201 instead of the new 204 just for that reason.

I wanted Champion's best hull before it was superceded. I didn't know the 202 was coming a year later!

Looking at his pictures, that appears to be a 86" hull. The 204 & 190 came out in 93. They show to be 91" hulls. There were some 92" beam hulls, but will have to refer to Lea and here brochure collection. Champion never used the term "Wide Body". They did use the term "Beam Forward" for the hulls that carried the beam width forward from the rear (widest point forward of the transom) to just forward of the consoles. They made the front deck wider all the way to the bow. The 206 I think was the only one built in Mtn Home. It was followed by the 198, 200 and 210. I'm not that familiar with the 196, it could be a Beam Forward hull based on the 206.

Yep. Maybe he has a 201. That would explain his speed.

Thanks, not a big issue to me. I wasn’t sure if it was a wide or standard with hull. I just know it is a 1992 19ft single console. No need to invest all this time researching it. Thanks again.
