    18lb line on a finesse jig 5/16

I know it’s not ideal probably around 14 would be but would 18 hinder the action a lot for dragging a finesse jig that was 5/16 and then a trailer?

Keep in mind that diameters will vary greatly between brands...given that you mention 18 I'm guessing you're using either Sunline or Daiwa. If so, that's barely thicker than something like Berkley 100% fluorocarbon in 12 lb, and it's otherwise the same diameter as Trilene XT 10 lb, P-Line CXX 10 lb, or Izorline 12 lb.

I've thrown up to 16 Sunline on little 3/8 finesse football jigs, but the weight choice was primarily because I was fishing them deep. I wouldn't hesitate ton throw 1/4 oz on the same line if I wasn't as deep. I have had a ton of luck with that setup. 18 isn't much different. I don't think it'd be a problem at all from a fishing perspective. My bigger concern would be whether you could cast it, and I suppose whether the hook on said finesse jig would hold up to getting yanked on by 18 lb string or through whatever cover you're dealing with that makes you want to use 18 lb.

I use #18 Sniper for a lot of different baits/techniques. I will use #18 if I’m fishing a finesse jig around heavier cover. Otherwise I throw it on #16. Like DrewFlu said, it’s more about diameter imo

I really look at the diameters and almost ignore the lb test. Especially for bottom bouncing outfits. I now have a couple trips using 14lb Sniper on a couple bottom bouncing setups. Easier to maintain contact and feel the bottom compared to 15/16lb in other larger diameter lines. More efficient. Will wait and see about toughness.
