Changed props and engine is running funky

I have a stratos 285xl with a 150 Yamaha on the back, 2 stroke and no jackplate. Was running a yammy 23m prop on it before with some wear but still turning 5700 rpm. Ended up purchasing a 23p tempest brand new and the boat was acting weird, jumping around on the tachometer and feeling like it was missing. Wouldn’t even get to 5300 rpm. Any idea what the problem could be? I’m shocked because I thought a lot a people used this prop on this setup.

I doubt the prop is causing this.

I'd say put the old prop back on and see if it runs normal again. Best guess is it's probably your engine having issues. However, if it runs normal with the old prop there's a slim chance there could be some nasty cavitation going on with the new prop. Merc props have the VPS (vent plug system), did yours come with plastic plugs installed or are the three holes completely open? If there’s too much air going through your prop could be blowing out and not grabbing enough: you would more than likely notice this during the hole shot before anything else. I’ve heard some other brand motors need a ring installed at the base with merc props to get them to fit correctly

Check the hub kit and see if anything is awry. Try the old prop trick then see what happens.

Doesn't the Tempest need the exhaust ring possibly?

no, it won’t fit. It’s already a 43/4 inch barrel

Sounds to me like the prop is losing bite. I would start with 3 solid plugs and take a drill with different size bits out with you and see if you can dial it in. Not having a jack plate is putting you at a big disadvantage here because a prop change can require a big motor height change in some cases.

How’s the hub? Same hub used on both props or does each prop have its own pressed in?
