    Interpreting distance with Livescope

I'm about three weeks into fishing with the LVS34 system and I am puzzled by the distance function when using the system on forward mode. It seems that when I am seeing something that the unit says is 40 feet in front of me the object is really only about 20 feet away. This is very obvious when "looking" at a channel marker that is basically a telephone pole. My unit will show it to be 40 feet away when it is obviously only about 20 feet away. Is this because I am roughly 20 feet of water at the time or is there a calibration that I haven't done?

I'd honestly trust the livescope over your eyeballs / estimations. As most guys who are new and learning to cast accurately with livescope learn, "40 feet is way closer than you think, and 100 feet is way further than you think"

The Livescope distance should be accurate.

I'm taking a tape measure the next time I go fishing and will report back.

My wife asks if I'm going to fish every day. I can't fish every day. Some days I might be sick.

An easy check is to trim your outboard all the way down and turn your TM around and look at it. I can see my skeg about 20’ behind me when I do that. That really put things into perspective for me in regards to distance. 20 ft is about the length of a boat and I use that reference in my head all the time when casting to targets.
