I've been trying to capture good shots of the Northern Lights for years and years. Watching for the alerts, getting out of bed in the middle of the night and driving north hoping to get a cool shot. Usually end up with just a faint glow on the horizon, or too many clouds, or no lights at all. Last night, it finally went down and I was there to witness and capture it with my girlfriend. On our way to our spot we could see pillars of light even with headlights coming at us on the roads. We got to our spot and set up the camera and the pillars disappeared, my heart was sinking, did I miss it again? We hung out for a while waiting for a tow truck to come pull a couple unfortunate people out of the parking lot at the boat ramp that had 2 feet of snow in it, and talking with another photographer. I ran to the truck to grab a long lens to get a shot of the moon as it was sinking towards the horizon. I took two shots of the moon that didn't really turn out great, and then my girlfriend says "oh wow". I look over my shoulder and immediately swap lenses, reposition the camera and started snapping. Pillars and waves, multiple colors, an incredible show for about 20 minutes. We ran out of the house so quick, neither of us were prepared for the weather. Once the show started to dwindle, we packed up to head out. It was easily the best showing I have ever seen, and a lot of the people that chase the lights in my area said it was top 5 of the last 25 years. So very fortunate to have gone with my gut and went out to shoot last night.
Enjoy. I know I did!
