    I've had a pike grab a crankbait hanging several inches out of the water and slingshot the rod and reel off the gunnel into the water.

    i had the same thing happen last summer. i caught a 5.5#-6# fish on a crankbait, and when i released it, it grabbed the bait again. i figured i caught it 1st and it caught me 2nd! lol

    my dad had something similar happen. we were ice fishing and we had a jigging pole sitting on an upside down bucket. Walked away to check a flag and turned around to see the handle of the rod going through the hole

    I have had that happen also. I've learned to reel in or secure the rod better if I am stepping away.
