Shimano SLX reel spool shaft bearing

Has anyone tried adding a spool shaft bearing to one of these reels? If so, any noticeable improvement? I have ordered a 5x10x4 ceramic bearing for mine to try it out.

Do you mean drive shaft bearing? See pic and the circled bushing

If indeed you mean the drive shaft bearing, part 31 (that I circled above), and I also replaced worm gear bushing (part number 5334). I have replaced both of those in my SLX DC (along with 4 added knob bearings).

I never really used the reel much before I swapped these out, but it seems smoother when in the hand. So I added 6 bearings to my SLX and added 5 bearings to all my Curado D

I am refering to a bearing that attaches to the spool itself. There is already a pin there to hold it in place and a housing for it where the spool mates up to the pinion. I have several other reels that came with this bearing, one example being the old Curado 200b.reel.jpg

I’d have to pull one of mine apart to see if it’s even possible with the DCs.

where you circled, the spool shaft DOES NOT go through. Bushing 31 fits there which is drive shaft which I replaced with bearing

Here is a better example of what I am talking about. Bottom spool is off Curado with the bearing, and the top spool is off of the SLX. The second picture shows on the SLX that a 10 mm bearing will fit in the spot where the spool shaft mates with the pinion gear.

No…..not a good idea. If it needed it they would have put it in. That bearing in a reel with two sideplate bearings would only slow the spool down….Dan

The spool is rubbing on the reel frame when reeling anything with resistance. I am trying to mitigate this. I have decided to send it in for warranty and if they can’t fix it or replace it to chunk it in the trash. Shimano has been good to me the last 39 years since I bought my first with reliability. This one is the first I have been unhappy with.
