Do we need to carry flares in ma ??

On a 18' boat are flares mandatory to carry like a throw cushion and an oar, sound device and anchor???

I think that is more for offshore boats. Or the Great Lakes

For boats 16′ in length or greater:
    • One orange distress flag and one electric distress light OR
    • Three hand-held or floating orange smoke signals and one electric distress light OR
    • Three red flares for combined day/night use, which can be handheld, meteor or parachute type

If your boat is over 16 feet, you must carry VDSs. The exceptions to this requirement are:

    • Vessels on lakes (except the Great Lakes)

I believe flares are required in Navagable waters, ie Coast Guard. I do not believe on a pond it is required.
The oar, anchor, sound device yes. The cushion is pretty interesting. It has to accesable, like you fire extinguisher. They are not to be in a compartment. I know several that have gotten ticket or warnings on this. I believe at one time, one of the bassboat companies addressed this and had a cusion compartment in the seat step up, so the edge/Handle was exposed.. .

Problem with flares....they have expiration dates.....

I admit I have a tiny little paddle, to meet the reqirement, but would be totally useless to use.

When you enter into DC on the Potomac.....expect to be checked, especially in the Washinton Channel by Ft McNair.

Catch 22 the way it's written, as usual with the law.

All vessels, regardless of length or type, are required to carry night signals when operating between sunset and sunrise.
Most vessels must carry day signals also. Exceptions to the requirement for day signals are:
    * Recreational vessels that are less than 16 feet in length.
    * Non-motorizied open sailboats that are less than 26 feet in length.
    * Manually propelled vessels.

But as always, just carry it all so you don’t have to play semantics games.

One I got a Ticket on Wallenpaupack in PA............. Not having by Battery terminals covered. You are supposed to have the rubber covers over your terminals. The CO, just motored up asked to board and went through the whole boat........

Years back they use to do courtesy checks on boats at different ponds and give you a sticker when you passed but i think that is a thing of the past...I try to carry everything required but the flares through me for a loop but they come in a set of 4 I think so 2 guys can buy a pack and split the cosr and each have 2 in there boat to cover there butts...

Agree, it's confusing. Just above it, we need "Daytime Visual Distress Signals"
To avoid the BS, I carry a zip bag with 4 flares. Book says we need a minumum of 3 flares..... And thanks to Al, I found out they expired in 2021.

One thing in Mass that I found out, if you have a couple of girls in bikinis on board and EPO(s) are around, chances are pretty high you will get boarded and I don't blame them one minute.....

If you want to be sure, you could go through a check with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. I think you get a sticker if you pass. It may go quicker for you when whoever floats up on you for the real inspection.

Last time I looked, lakes and ponds weren't "coastal waters"

Got pulled over on a lake in Vermont and all he wanted to see was a paddle, anchor and a horn. I didn't have my registration on me and he didn't care.
