    04 225DI Timing

When I go to set the timing, do I need to have back pressure on the motor or can I do this on muffs? The software doesn't specify.

Im doing something wrong or Im missing something. Today, I used the stop tool according to the procedure in the service manual. My pointer was off 1 deg. I set that and fired it up. Let it warm up, connected the laptop and went into the timing mode. Timing should be set at 20deg. Got out of timing mode and checked timing with a timing light. Im reading 1-2deg retarded. Go back into timing mode and advance 1 deg. Set the timing and its still 1-2 deg retarded. Kept bumping 1 deg and its dont move, still 1 deg retarded. Im locking it in each time. I checked timing while in the timing mode, its 1-2deg advanced. Tried retarding 1 deg at a time, set it and its still not changing. What am I missing??
