2004 225 3.1 Vmax

I'm looking at an older boat which has a 225 Vmax on it. The owner says he has no hour meter, but claims it's low hours. (of course it does) Is there any way I can check the hours without taking it to a shop? I've got an apple laptop if loading a diagnostic tool onto it is an option.. or Is there any "handheld" tools I can purchase?
