DFI Oil on top impeller housing

    Hey All,
    Engine Serial Number 1B822149

Removed the lower unit to install new water pump impeller. Notice some DFI oil on top of impeller housing, any ideas of which seal or seals are leaking?

    Thanks-

Thanks for the reply everyone..... outstanding picture, at this time of my life, that's better than a centerfold. I have the Mercury manual, would anyone have a parts list or tips & trick for this task?

Hoping Don will chime in with a parts list, which I will buy the parts from him.

Out to the garage to start set up.

Hit Rhonda up with your serial number- you'll need the o-rings, two seals, powerhead gasket, tie wraps and oetiker clamps for the thermostat hoses.

I'm with Joe: No way on this earth would I work under that contraption!

Also need a lift ring and a torque wrench adapter.

I used an engine hoist and left the powerhead hanging for a little over 3 days while I scraped the powerhead gasket with plastic scrapers.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm planning on using the gantry. Also have a handful of torque wrench adapters, my parts list does include lifting ring.

Don mentioned I need two seals, are these lips seals? What means did you use to remove if they are lip seals.

    Thanks

Honestly, I'm a metal guy. Vertical load like this would hold ALOT more with this ladder!!

I made this as my safety. I guarantee this would hold a small pick up. The top rungs are very shallow apart! Yes, massive and overkill!! As I stated I'm a machinist and welder. My load is not going anywhere!! Honestly what the ladder is holding(what 270 lb or lesssss). Know your ladder ratings( plus the safety factor). Most of all just good common sense!
By the way I kno 300 lb men using this ladder and it's using 1 ladder rung! Again this is not a CHEAP LADDER!

I'm surprised Don didn't mention you can get the whole carrier ready to just bolt on and not have to mess with installing them in the old carrier. (Unless it's not available for your particular application).

Thanks for the info, for not knowing much about the Mercury engines this puzzle starting to come together.

Majority of my experience was working in a municipal water treatment plant, pumps in electrical equipment for 3 decades.

If I remember correctly on my engine, the thread size for the lower crankshaft seal assembly bolts were the same as the impeller housing. I didn’t have the forethought at the time I did mine but I think using the impeller guide pins would work for getting the crankshaft seal assembly installed evenly to get two of the bolts started.

Hopefully Joe or Don can confirm.

Side Note: I also use a ladder for my impeller change jobs! Well done.
