    1979 Mercury 115 lower unit removal/install question.

My wife's Grandfather bought a boat and decided to try to change the water pump. He says the gear shift was in neutral when he dropped the lower unit. The prop will "free spin" making a clicking noise when turned clockwise. When you spin the prop counter clockwise it spins the shaft and impeller and all that. So maybe I'm wrong but to me it seems like it's in gear which is fine but I don't know if it's in reverse or forward? Thanks for any responses in advance.

when driveshaft is rotated clockwise prop will rotate clockwise if in forward gear , better to install with both handel and gearcase in neutral position good luck JOE

10 4 thanks they got it figured out. I always do mine in neutral as well. Now they can't get it to fire up so I'm sure I'll be back.
