    Steering fluid leaking

When I arrived at the boat launch yesterday, an hours ride from my house, I noticed spots of steering fluid on my drivers seat. Upon further inspection I could see the fluid leaking from the back of the steering wheel in the steering column. Any thoughts on what this might be.

Boat is a 1993 Champion 201 DCR. It has a 1995 Mercury 200 hp xri.

Sounds like you have a steering hose issue behind the helm, need to climb under the dash and have a look.

Or maybe the cap to the fluid reservoir at the helm came loose somehow? I'm surprised you have hydraulic steering

The steering feels a little jerky at high speeds.

That's an indication that you have air in the system, so your leak needs to be found and fixed before you go screaming down the lake ...

Thanks to everyone for their help (and concern). I found a small leak in the seal around the steering wheel shaft. Ordered a seal kit. Definitely was low on fluid and had air in the system. Thanks again!

This guy, Tyler Holland (no relation that I know of), has some good videos and tools for servicing SeaStar systems.

Yeah, found him a few years ago, he was working for a dealer then broke away and started Outboard Specialty Tools. I bought one of his bubble purge kits that makes bleeding the system pretty darn easy.

I ordered that purge kit last year. I’ll second that “pretty darn easy”.
