    Tachometer issue

Today my tachometer started jumping all over the place it would peg the needle just cruising and back and forth. On dead idle it would show 2000 rpm. Not sure where to begin to diagnose this issue. The Tach is original 18 yrs old and it`s regular analog unit. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

On the back of the tach there should be some kind of switch for the number of cylinders 2,3,4,6,8. Switch it back and forth half a dozen times then set it back where it belongs.
The contacts get dirty. This normally will fix it. Been there done that!
