Not at all. The Pro brings Active Image HD which promises to be the best side and downscan on the market as well as Fish Reveal on Sidescan. But if you can live without that, a Live will do everything you are expecting.

The screen on the Pro introduces a new feature which is supposed to allow viewing at any angle regardless of glare. Until someone gets one, it's all advertising. Screen resolution is unchanged 1280x800 for the 12" models.

Don’t take this rudely, but if you aren’t going to spend weeks staring at the graph, to really learn how to use FFS. Just save your money by buying the AT1 and a Live graph. It’s not for everyone and it takes a lot of patience and time to really learn how to use it, most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between a AT1 vs the AT2.

If you end up with the Garmin, you have to go with the more expensive LVS34, the old LVS32 has a god awful stitching and entire trees will disappear into it.

$3K is the limit of the current budget, but all this may result in saving a few more bucks and do this in the Fall in order to get the best result.

It appears that hoppers recipe would be about $4450 with a HDS Pro 12 and AT2. There are so many different Garmin transducers that I’m not sure what would be an apples to apples comparison, but it appears it would cost more for a 12” Garmin standalone live scope setup.

In further internet surfing I saw a claim that the only thing that the HDS Pro adds over the HDS Live is the ability to connect two AT transducers so that one can show horizontal and the other a vertical forward scan. That sounds as if it could be confusing. If anyone knows of anything else that the Pro brings to the party please post it.
A 9 Live and AT 2 will be right at $3000 after the current $200 rebate from Lowrance.

Those are both valid points. I am planning a week long trip this spring just to try and learn my AT2. There is a huge learning curve as I’ve played quite extensively with my partners AT1 and had a tough time figuring it out while also trying to fish.

You could do the AT2 and a live 9/12. You do not have to get a pro for the AT2

I have a 16”, it’s not worth it. Be happy with the 12”, it’s all you need.

Put the Live at the bow. The Active Target module goes in your rod locker and connects by Ethernet to the Live. Run another Ethernet cable from the second port on the Live to the Elite at the console. To accomplish this you need at least a 9” Live (or Carbon) so you have enough Ethernet ports. AT images will be available on both units this way.

I have at1, carbon and live, very little difference with carbon. Update is available, Carbon acts a little silly in rain as it puddles in corners. Processor speed faster on live, from what I have read, pro isn’t a major increase except for the new 3 in 1. Other than that, about the same. As far as active target 2, after I am done with boat, having some carbon pieces water jetted. I will throw all back together and fish a bit and the active target 2 will be installed. I have been very happy with at1 myself

Very happy with my Live 12 on the bow and AT1. The 4/8 programmable quick keys are nice!

I am assuming that I will be able to move the Navionics card from my Elite 9Ti2 to the HDS Live. Is this an accurate assumption?

For the best results run the AT module on an independent power source with a cutoff switch to stop the pinging when it out of the water.

Running the AT by itself is not necessary unless it’s convenient for you. I ran a dedicated cable from my main switch in the back to a fuse box in the rod locker. Everything runs out of the fuse box. Of course I will Stop Sonar on AT when not using it or when it’s not in the water same as I’ve always done for any transducer. While the transducer is stopped the module barely draws any power. As long as your wiring and battery are good and you didn’t previously have any electrical noise, 12 V is 12 V. I’ve installed them with and without a switch . Either way works. In my personal boat, the console HDS wakes up both the 3D and AT2 and shuts them off with the yellow wires all tied together. In your situation, I’d run your 50 AH battery through a switched breaker (blue seas) up to a fuse box and run all you electronics off it.
