    Question RT188P Single Axle

Looking at a 2023, have you ever wished your single axle trailer had brakes?

My 2022 RT 188P came with an option for a surge brake and I paid for it. The boat and trailer are relatively heavy for a tin boat and the trailer brakes work well.

Nope, but as mentioned above I am dragging it with a full size pickup. My lake ready non Pad RT1188 DC only weighed 2700 pounds at a truck scale.

I removed the brakes from my trailer. Pulling with a F250 Super Duty 6.7 Diesel.

Puller is a 2022 F150 with a 5.0, 10 speed trans. Can I add brakes if needed at a later date or purchase just a trailer with brakes from Ranger?

You don’t need brakes on an 18 ft aluminum.

In some states it’s a legal requirement.

My 2020 trailer came standard with surge brakes. In regards to legality of brake requirements, in IL, trailers rated for 3000# or more require brakes. Not sure if other states require the same.

    Check with your State requirements.
If you are using your rig in Salt or Brackish water, those brakes become a huge maintenance issue. Mine went to crap in less than 18 months.

In South Carolina you don’t need brakes on a trailer under 3000lbs (common for several states)
the weight of the rt188 is around 2000lbs
friend of mine had brakes on his 18ft aluminum and had so many problems that he finally just removed them.

Yup. Some are much lower than that, though. I think NY is 1000 lbs. I also think it goes by the weight rating of the trailer and not the actual weight of the boat.

    Nope- NY is 3000lbs also
Trailers weighing over 1,000 pounds unladen, and trailers having a maximum gross weight in excess of 3,000 pounds, must be equipped with brakes.

Ah. Good catch. Regardless, my 18 foot tin came on a trailer with a maximum gross weight in excess of 3,000 lbs, so brakes for me.
