You can but, it's usually fished, lift and fall like a Texas rig so you get the most action on the drop. I fish my free rigs like I do Texas.

I think the technique you are thinking of is how most fish cover scats or poop style baits. That's how I fish my scats.

If I lift the bait off the bottom I usually let it fall on slack line so the bait falls slowly to the bottom. That works for me with the free rig. Most of my fish come on the fall on slack line.

I guess I am different as I usually have a tight line on a Texas Rig when I lift and drop it.

With the free rig I drop my rod tip when I pull and drop the bait so the weight goes to the bottom and the bait takes some time settling to the bottom.
