Who tows with a new tundra

Looking to possibly go from Several sierras and silverados to a platinum tundra crew. I have a 520r so what should I expect. Looking for real world performance as far as hills go and maybe mileage but I know how that goes.

Regardless of bragging rights all 1/2 tons pretty much tow about the same. Fuel economy towing is usually within 1-2 mpgs as well.

I've only towed my boat once (Falcon 5205) since I picked it up after Thanksgiving, so I don't have avg towing mpg #s as yet. The gas tank is bigger so that helps. I live in Central Texas (Hill Country), drove out to Lake LBJ yesterday, lots of steep hills and winding roads. I had only heard that it would pull well from other Tundra owners. After yesterday I'm very pleased to say that it did a great job on hilly and winding 1431 road to the lake.

I hate to say it but with mileage and ONLY mileage you are going from the best to one of the worst. With that being said in all other areas the Toyota is better, especially towing but more importantly stopping. I would bet maybe 1 mpg less towing. I cant say 100% on that as the smallest thing I have had any experience with was a 26' camper and the Tundra pulled it very good. CJ

We all have our tastes, likes, and preferences, like interior and looks. I would agree you might lose a little mpg with the Toyota, but it’s a superior truck in almost every way.

Pass everything but the gas station is pretty accurate.

5.7l 2010 Tundra Crewmax Towing a 22ft ranger with tandem trailer on the freeway 70-75 I get 9mpg or less.
Typically tow in S-6 or S-5 to keep it from shifting so much.

Majority of my driving/miles are in-town or side roads/back highways.

The newer models may get a little better mileage just being new but at 130k miles on a 13yr old truck I'm sure I've lost 1-2mpg over time. Dash read out says my average mpg is 11.9 which has dropped from 13.1 over the last 9 years.

Edit: Performance is in the first sentence. Truck gets up and goes with or without a trailer behind you. That might also be contributing factor to my gas mileage.

The OP is asking about the new TT V6 motors not the 5.7L V8s. I am interested to know as well. I currently have a 5.7L V8. It is not bad on gas if you do not have a lead foot.

2018 pulling a buddies 520L to Florida and back, about 2000 miles. We averaged 12 MPG pulling between 70-75 MPH in S5. S4 is straight 1-1 with a 4.30 rear end. If it can’t pull it in that gear it doesn’t need to be pulled with a half ton. Expect the new V6 to be real close in averages. They shine on the freeway unloaded if you consider mid 20’s as “excellent”. If you look up the 3.5 Eco/ Hybrid on fuelly you’ll dee it averages what Toyota does, 17 MPG which is what my last 5.3 Silverado averaged. Both of my 5.7L Tundras have averaged 15, fuelly average is 14. For 3 MPG drive whatever you prefer.

I’ll know in a few weeks I went to the dark side. Should be here next week and I have a 1200 mile tow coming in 33 days.

    I would get a F150 or GM 1500 with a v8 instead. Don't get a new Ram 1500 V8 they all have the e torque junk now.

A 2018 is a not NEW Tundra. It is an older Tundra.

Congrats and I highly doubt you will be disappointed. If you decide to keep it longer term, you will be even happier. They just keep going.

True, but the OP asked about possible MPG.

    https://www.fuelly.com/car/toyota/tundra

Here ya go, over 300,000 miles tracked so far on the new 3.5 is is showing a 3MPG average increase over the old 5.7.

There should be ZERO doubt on the new 3.5 pulling better than any other gen Tundra. At least for those of us who have drove other turbo motors.

My experience with anything that is v6 TT is that it is worse on towing MPG (then the same setup with v8) because it will be in boost....requiring more fuel.

Toyota quality control is suffering right now and the overall quality is not what is used to be:(
I'd wait a couple years till they sort out the issues.

I'm shocked to hear that Toyota is having significant quality issues. It has been my experience through the years that their quality levels are second to none. I own 4 different Toyotas right now and all 4 have been rock freaking solid. Especially my 2016 Tundra SR5. It's definitely not the most fuel efficient, but it pulls my bass boat as if nothing is back there and I have had ZERO quality issues out of it since purchasing. Tough as nails.
