Yeppers, killing a waked chatter in between rocks and dropping into pockets and holes in between structure is a great tech to rile up killer attacks from bigger bass... especially when they are chasing sunfish shallow. Also, I used a 2019 Morethan PE SV 8:6:1 for the rivers out here in Middle Tennessee last year when the waters were high and really moving, it really helped to keep up with fast moving and striking smallies. This said, 8.6:1 gears, even the C6191 marine grade phosphor bronze-brass in the Morethan, can wear out prematurely when cranking 1oz+ spinnerbaits with bigger blades in heavy current.
