    How to distance

Only 1 launch ramp is open on Lake Mead. I want to make a run up to the other end of the lake. I used google maps to get distance. Its about 28 miles one way. How do I know if I can make it?
I have a 99 Champion 187 with a 98 Merc 175 EFI. Worth risking? Or do I need to just drive the lake and find out a baseline first? I know a lot of factors go into this calculation.

I'd make that run in my baby Ranger, 185vs with a 150 and not think twice about it. Ran further than that here on the Ohio River, I've got a 30 gallon tank BTW.

Figure about 3 mpg at WOT. Unless you have a super small gas tank, you should be fine.

Just keep an eye on the weather and have enough fuel to get back. Some emergency stuff for the trip if you don't already carry it.
I have a 30 gal tank with a 150 vmax Hpdi and can get over 100 miles out of a tank if I don't hammer on it. This is running on The St.lawrence, Oneida etc.

What is your fuel capacity? Without that factor, it’s impossible to give you an answer.

Not sure how big your tank is, but if it is 30gl you should be able to make that run with a full tank.

On the big pond, we use the rule of 1/3. 1/3 out, 1/3 back and 1/3 for emergency or reserve. Weather and other conditions can change in a heartbeat on the Ocean, not sure how bad it can get with the current water level at Mead but I recall in years past, I’d heard stories of gale like winds on that lake.

Even with the older EFI you should be able to make at least 120 miles on one tank of gas, probably more like 160 at cruising speed. I can't imagine that the river twists and turns enough to double the distance. You'll be fine.

I like that strategy have a whole lot of respect for the Big Pond but that advice can also be applied to other bodies of water as well.

I used to get about 2-2.5 mpg with my EFI pedal to the floor. Keep it trimmed up but around 4200-4500 rpm’s and you’ll probably get 3mpg. Watch GPS for miles driven and I’d stop around the 5/8 gas tank mark.
