Do you strap your poles when trailering?

Is there an issue with them coming down during trailering?

I had the hydraulic line on my Gen1 PP's let go twice while traveling, once I caught right away the other I didn't, so I spent some time replacing a spike. I use straps on my Gen2 PP's even though the hydraulics are much improved and it's probably not needed.

Started strapping last year after doing rebuilds on 10 ' blades. Am hooking ratchet straps to transom eyes & wrapping strap around pole 1 time to pull everything tight. 1 strap each side. I do not see them moving now like they did using just the travel covers. Don't need a lot of pressure to secure them tighter than covers alone. I believe that there is more wear caused by highway vibration then by using them. Time will tell.

Ray, while a retaining strap around the pole may hold a PP together to stop accidental deployment, the violent shaking of the pole(s) while trailering is of more concern as it generates excessive wear on the joints/bushings. Same issue with PP covers.

By restraining the pole to the boat itself you can resolve both issues and increase the longevity of the pole(s). Use of stainless steel ratchet straps accomplishes this. I rebuilt my PPs years ago and started ratcheting them tightly after that. Minimized the road shake and after 7 years they are just as tight as they were after the rebuild.

Yes. Cheap insurance against the poles falling after springing a leak in the hose. I purchased the ones from PP after I sprung a leak and dragged a pole. Been strapping them ever since.

Great advice as I never took into consideration the vibrations caused by the road. And your boat, good sir, is a beauty, I so wish there was something comparable made now. I know some can be optioned out to get close to the intercoastal but just not close enough. And forget finding a quality used one. Looked for years and finally gave in a bought a center console with just about a bass boat hull.
