As a Mets fan, I was afraid he would sign a contract like that with the Mets. In order for that deal to be worth the money over the 5 years he needs to start 130 to 150 games, and the Rangers need to win about 100 to 120 of those starts. Anything less makes it a losing deal

He’s the best pitcher in the game for about 85 innings per year. You can have all the socialism you want in the game and not prevent teams from making bad deals like this.

Padres sure seem to have no problem buying their way to a championship.

Not quite yet but ownership sees the value and the reward is a lot of fans in the seats in a relatively small market.

They have an informal salary cap. Teams pay a penalty for having a payroll above a certain number. A bigger issue is teams who consistently do not attempt to compete. The Pirates would be a good example.

I am so glad that our state does not have MLB. Even if it did I would not pay for any tickets. Went and saw Yankees in August, 4 of us, Seats behind Yankee dugout $200 each. Did not have to pay for them.

Here is a list of prices for various items throughout the taxpayer funded Stadiums. I cannot fathom how a family would be able to attend some games. I remember taking my son to a Giants™ game when AT&T™ nee:PacBell™ opened and it was $20.00 just to park. The next time we went we took the Ferry and just got soaked on prices INSIDE that time.

I have a Player's Pass from when I played and I've never used it due to the costs associated with the ' fun™ '...

I don’t mind a high dollar, 5 year contract. It’s the 8-10 year contracts that make me shake my head.

Those digits must be rounded or some other "new math™" or else all attendees would have to wear sandals as they couldn't figure out the change w/out assistance...

One interesting thing though is it seems like the Luxury tax on teams going over a certain spending amount might, all be it slowy, be starting to work. Heck the Red Sox started cutting payroll a few years ago, the Yankees now actually have a budget, Mets who have a multi billionaire owner also do. The all due it to limit their luxury tax hit as that is just lost money they cannot recover. Of course the luxury tax has led to a new problem as there are plenty of team owners willing to put a crappy team on the field year to year, then when they get their share of the luxury tax money which is supposed to help then improve their teams they just pocket it.
