    Carpet

So I’m getting ready to put new carpet in my 2004 285 pro xl. The guy said he is gonna do 20oz and said he wouldn’t do the padding. What’s your thoughts. Padding or no padding with 20oz carpet?

If it were me, I'd at least pad the front deck. Did he say why he wouldn't do it? Seems odd.

pad the front, I had it done on my 20ss and was great addition to have-- don't do lids or anything behind front edge of lids

Agreed. I padded front and rear deck and used 20oz carpet. Saves me knees

If the boat came factory with 20oz carpet then stay with 20oz. If you go up in size there is a good chance the lids will be difficult to open due to the extra thickness. As for the padding I've never had it and I'm okay without it. I think that's a personal choice so do what you think you would like.

Yes ^, check what was OEM. I have a Stratos and tried to put 20 oz carpet in it and the lids would not even come close to shutting and it was a disaster.

I think its crank68 that does carpet on hear, you need to talk to him. I had to shave , clip the vertical edges to get the lids to open, close on a boat I recarpeted. No experence with padding.

I did my 2000 Javelin Renegade 20 with a dual console with Ranger carpet which was 24oz I'm pretty sure and I also padded the front deck and cooler as well between the seats. The lids were a little tight to begin with but after 2 years I'm still pleased with everything and the way it turned out.

My 2006 statos 285 magnum came with 16 oz. I put new 20 oz in it in 2016 myself. Lids were a little tight at first but no issues closing them after a little use.

I did my 2003 Bass Cat carpet myseld and just padded the front deck. I used Bass Cat carpet and it (at the time) is 24oz. I love the padded deck but wish I would have done the whole front deck.
It does make a difference. And if your just going to use 20oz i would definatly do it all.

Bass Cat just came out with 28 oz. Special run from Syntec according to Rick Pierce. 24 oz is what they've had for a long time.

Drewflu33 is correct the cat carpet is 28oz now. My new lynx has the 28oz it’s the same thickness as 24oz but more carpet strands per square inch.

As for the OP I would find someone else to do my boat if he won’t put padding under the carpet.

My Ranger came with the front padded.
It got so many ripples in it I had it removed.
    I don't miss it.

I just had the Aquatraction dealer install carpet in my 2002 Stratos 18xl. I choose 20 oz without padding and I am very pleased with it. I also installed new seats to give the old girl a complete facelift.
