My Champion has no steering cable. I measured and came up with 10 ft, I believe its to short. I do have Jack plate on transom. What is correct length.

Measure from the center of the steering wheel to the center of the gunnel,
then measure from that spot to the center of the splash well, then measure from there to
center of engine, then I think you add 2’ ??, to that number?
I did that came out too short. Need Champion owner who has 1983 168 to tell me what length.
If I read your message correctly- you don’t have a old steering cable to work with?
If you did there is a number stamped on it that telefex can tell you the length.
When my cables locked up , I switched to hydraulic steering.
One problem trying to replace cables in a Champion ( per Teleflex), Champion had them
made to custom sizes , that are not available to the consumer.
Ny boat cable length per Teleflex were 14.5’
They sell new cables in even numbered lengths.
So, in my case I would have had to buy 16’ cables.
What was i to do with the extra?
That was just one reason why I went with hydraulic steering.
Installed myself.
Goid luck.
Had a marine shop install Teleflex NFB steering system, water pressure gauge, and CMC jack plate in 2003. Shop got standard length cables to work. The 2003 NFB still work great, and motor can not move without turning steering wheel, so no motor turning movement while trailering.

IIRC, the cables on my old 168 were 11 footers hooked to a nfb helm.
