Can you eliminate the awkward plastic air filter cover?

I was looking at it today on my 2.5 L. Seems like you could get something that would ring clamp to the two items that need to be filtered. (Air compressor intake and the main engine air intake. I can remember a mercury “tech” in fort myers put it on wrong…the flywheel ate up the side of the plastic and The particles got sucked into the reeds. Also, how about an inline filter for the cooling water for the air compressor? Thanks!

Please remember to provide the Required Info when posting (Serial Number). Your simple "my 2.5 L" doesn't do a lot to identify what you have.

Since you've mentioned a compressor, I'll surmise it's an Optimax 2.5L of some variety.

Did you know that the filter ONLY filters air to the Air Compressor?

The flywheel Cover also provides protection from water ingestion in the event of backwash or water entering the air inlets of the top cowling.
