Looking at putting a 200 Suzuki four stroke on my 201D. Anyone know what kind of performance and efficiency I should expect?

Is there a reason why you are powering down? I don't follow the cost of new motors, so I have no idea of the cost difference between a 200 and higher HP.
Currently, I am running an '03 225 EFI that has received some work, and I pray that I will have it for many more yrs.
My 1999 0ptimax 225 lost compression on #6 cylinder. Will need a rebuild or new power head. The cost for either option is not with putting into a 23 year old motor. The Suzuki 200 is about 8 lbs weight difference than the 225 optimax and is cheaper than a new power head. The new motor comes with a 5 year warranty from Suzuki also.

That is amazing that a new motor can cost as much as a new power head. I am sure that with the 225 optimax running a 5 cylinder, that new 200 hp should be on par if nor a bit faster.
Since it sounds like a new Suzuki is at a very fair price, did you by any chance check on a 225 or 250 HP cost?
New in the crate 2020 200hp Suzuki 4 stroke $14,000
225 Suzuki 4 stroke is $19,500
250 Suzuki 4 stroke is 20,500
All come with 5 year Suzuki warranty.
Estimate for new powerhead installed on the optimax 225 was $15,000.

Wow, that is a definite WTF moment on that powerhead, since I have seen fully rebuilt 225 Opti going in dime mark. I am sure 5K is a chunk of change, and at that point 250 would have been the better choice. I am sure you do well with the 200, since I have never caught a fish even at my cruising speed let alone at WOT.
5k is a lot, however waiting 6 months to a year with no real answers on when anyone can get a motor is really what helped me move to the in stock 200hp.

Did you happen to deal with Clark Marine? I'm leaning towards a Suzuki when the time comes, and have been in contact with them regarding when one will be available.

I have a feeling you would be disappointed with a Suzuki 200 on your boat as it will not perform anywhere close to your merc 225. It will be reliable, but speed won't even be close. Suzuki does not make a 225 in a 20" shaft so If your boat is rated for a 250 then I would swing for the 250SS.

I have a 250SS on a 2000 procraft 210 super pro. Love it. However I think you will miss those extra 50 ponies.
I did check with Clark Marine, my local dealer was able to match their prices.

The few times I put the 225 optimax at WOT it would do around 64mph. Looking at some others that have re powered a 225 with a 200 4 stroke Suzuki, the numbers look about 5mph slower. The closest comparison I can find is a Ranger 491, test results was 62mph at WOT. The torque at low to mid throttle is a big improvement as well. I’m not looking for a speed boat but am looking for a reliable easy to maintain motor. I can’t see spending 6-7K more for 5-8mph.

I hear what you are saying about not being a speed demon but an underpowered boat is an underpowered boat! A 200 will have to work harder to cruise like a higher HP motor so efficiency might not be as good as the higher HP. A factor for me would also be resale, not so much about price but just how many people who might not consider buying your boat when they find out it has a 200 on it should you need to sell it. Bottom line is the bottom line and if I was faced with put the 200 on it and be able to boat and fish or let it sit unused, I'd put the 200 on it:-)

According to Viper Boats, the 200 HP would be the lowest HP for the Cobra 201, so it would not be way out of the ball park. Further, the Zuke 200 may run as fast or better than a worn out 225.
Just my 2Cs.
Problem will be getting the right set up dialed in, since there will be very little intel out there for it. Personally, I would go for the 250SS HP, but the extra 5K wouldn't hurt me as much, so it comes down to personal finances.
My fishing partner used to run a 201D with a 200 efi. We fished lots of tournaments out of that boat. Yeah it wasn’t the fastest thing, probably ran 55 or so from what I can remember. We fish the winter series around here, and I hardly ever run over 55 all winter long with my 225.

Ryno,
Was that a 2.5L or 3.0L 200 EFI ? Those 3.0L 200 EFI have quite a bit of giddy up, especially if set up properly on the rig they are on.
I run an '03 225 EFI that has been set up and propped correctly off 10" JP, and 55 mph is usually my cruising speed during the summer months, since up my way water turns a tad hard in the winter.
I wouldn't put less than a 225 on it.
