    Trailer help from the experts.

I have a custom line trailer that the previous owner installed two new axles without breaks. When starting and stopping the trailer tongue slide back and forth. Is there a way to stop this?

There should be a lockout hole you can put a bolt through.

Very likely you are required by law to have brakes unless you have a very light boat.

Louisiana law is 3000# or greater is required to have trailer brakes. I haven’t weighed boat and trailer. Probably close to 3000 though. 21’ bullet.

I looked for a hole to lock it out. The only hole I see is where I put my pin to lock the coupler on the ball.

Usually it’s GVWR rather than actual weight, and most glass boat trailers are over 3,000lb GVWR

You will end up with adding brakes to at least one axle to be legal.

Some actuators don’t have a lock out mechanism, my Titan actuator does not, you can make a diy lockout by fitting something inside the sliding mechanism to stop it from moving. But I would believe you will need brakes, boat, gas, trailer etc probably equal 3000lbs.

Maybe this trailer did have brakes at one time. But owner removed when the new axles were installed. Sounds like the sliding portion of the tongue is still in tact and moving back and forth. Look for the slot where the pin slides back and forth. Stretch the tongue out, put a big nut in the slide and wrap with electrical tape.

Looks to me as though the previous owner took a short cut to save some money. A "C' clamp will work in the slot for short term application. Over 3000#, I'd want brakes as mentioned on one axle at least.

I recommend you take your rig to a truck stop with a scale, they will have you put the trailer on the scale unhook they will weigh it then hook back up and pick up your weight slip. My 20 ft Skeeter weight 4400 lbs. so your rig weighs more than you think.

It’s cool how you never need brakes on flat terrain?

Had many bass boats over the last 40 yrs. My new one is the first with brakes. Brackish saltwater down here trashes brakes. Plenty never fix them

Kodiak Stainless Disc brakes have no problems with brackish water. Or saltwater either.
