    201 Pro XL prop selection

Looking to try a different prop for my '04 201. Currently running a 2004 Merc 250 XS ( racing motor ) with the original silver colored Torquemaster ( not the wingmaster ) a 25 Tempest with moderate wear at roughly 3.5" below the pad. Hole shot is phenomenal, but im unimpressed with my top end. Im only seeing about 64mph @ 5500 RPM. Engine is running great, just had a full service done, so I know im good there. I had a friend tell me that he couldnt get a good top end with a standard Tempest either and he has exact same boat and motor as I have. The only Tempest he had luck with was a 26 pitch A45, which will run him into the upper 70's. However, im not interested in possibly destroying my lower unit due to a slung blade. Any suggestions?

that prop must be terrible and the engine is not best choice, I believe, on a big heavy boat-- call marks propeller service in Indiana as he will have spot on advice if you have all the data information he needs

that boat and engine should be 75-80 any day all day? need a 26 or 27 fury 3 to test also in the top area, there is a prop section and a set up section with lots of go fast guys that know the game well!

I’ve got that motor on mine. You should be running a 27 tempest or 26 fury 3 blade. The 25 tempest should be putting over the rev limiter. 77mph with the tempest and 74 with the fury as it has less lift but better control. Has an 8” hydraulic plate which makes prop to pad very easy to set as water conditions change settings a little. The 27 is a dog out of the hole until you put lithiums in the back to lighten it up. Really made the difference with that 3.0 motor. These conditions were with all tackle and 25 gallons of fuel and just myself. Once above 70 mph is when you have to start driving the boat with the 27.

I bought the Tempest used so unfortunately I dont know the history of it. I plan on starting there. Ideally, I was going to send my prop to Croxton and look at working it up to a 26 Tempest with some tip cup, with hopes of maintaining a fair top end without totally sacrificing my holeshot. You got my attention when you said Fury though. That prop run good all around?

Yes the 26 fury 3 is good all the way around. If I had to choose just one prop for the boat it would be that one.

Are you running a standard Fury 3 or does it have some work done to it?

And what are guys using for a 4 blade prop? I travel to Lake Erie a few times a year. Friend of mine runs a 27 Bravo. Would the Fury 4 be a better bet?

2007 201proxl 2007 250xs dual powerpoles, 5 batteries and 4 wind catching graphs and ghost trolling motor. I run a 25 fury4 and it’s the best all around prop I’ve found. Loaded to the gills it has no problem at all coming out of the hole and will run 75-77 any day of the week. I’ve also got a 26 fury3 that is a couple mph faster but I like the 4 blade fury better all around hands down.

You arent hitting the rev limiter with the 25 4 blade? Kinda curious about this now seeing that youre running a pitch lower with your 4 blade.

No sir not on the rev limiter. My motor has the 6400 limiter, and I turn it around 6300. Usually when you go from a 3 blade to a 4 blade you want to drop down a pitch.

Agree with kylkkyle on the 25 pitch Fury 4 for our hull. I have an 05 201 pro XL 2010 Yamaha 250 SHO, 10ft blades, 8in Atlas. I also tried a Yamaha 25T1 and 27T1, a 25 Tempest, and a 26 tempest. The 25 Fury 4 had the best all around mix of hole shot, handling, and top speed. But sadly I slung a blade recently on that prop so now I have a pretty door stop. A bunch of people who have also had that prop said they lose a blade pretty commonly if you run them high. Guys said the alloy is brittle and blades thin. I just got ahold of a 25 pitch Croxton Razor 4, which is really similar to the Fury 4 25, but with thicker blades. I just put it on about 15 min ago, and will run it tomorrow for the first time. Fingers crossed. Hope this helps.

Just a standard Fury3 26 pitch. Have no history with the fury 4

Try to find a 26 bravo1. Add pvs holes and raise the motor til you see water pressure start to drop. Lower 1/4 to 3/8 inch. May be a couple mph slower than a three blade but should still get you around 74-75 depending on elevation. I took my diameter down a 1/4”.
You will love the overall performance. Good luck

I have an 05 201 pro XL with a 250hp Yamaha vmax efi. I am using a 4 blade fury 25 prop. I was running a Yamaha 27 T1 3 blade. The 4blade pops up on pad and no chine walk. Solid at wot

I have now run the Razor 4 25p. It performs very similar to Fury 4 25p, but seems to have a little more bow lift. I had instant hole shot (4 of the 8 PVS plugs fully closed, 4 wide open), excellent grip, no chine, and tournament loaded with two guys, 26gal of fuel, and full livewells hit 70. I'm certain I could have eeked out a couple more mph, but we were in a tournament on a small body of water and only making short runs so I never got to really open it up.

what RPM’s were you seeing with the Razor?

Correction. I had the boat out today where I had to make a few very long runs and I got a better look. I hit 72.6 at right around 5700 rpm. I started to trim a little higher to see if I could get more rpms and speed out of it. The prop has a lot of bow lift, and I could feel the nose come up. But the boat started to chine walk, and I'm not super comfortable driving through hit, so I backed off.
