Sad, sad story. We’ve hiked there many times with the grandkids. I told my wife never again will I hike anywhere without my pistol. The young man was trying to help and lost his life, she had to witness him dying. What a F world we live in these days.

I was thinking more like Deliverance but either way it's a sad story. The earlier reports didn't mention others were involved

Most of the time things happen where and when you would never suspect it. A bunch of my family lives close to this. Been there a couple times myself. Many people are off their rockers these days! Prayers for the victims!

Not that I would ever hold anyone up, but I think I’d rather take my chances outside in a ritzy restaurant parking lot or something. I don’t think I’ve ever even taken my wallet on any multi day hikes in Mammoth Cave with the chance of it getting lost or wet. At most, they’d get a pair of Merrell’s and a Benchmade from me.

My wife and I hike all the time, some remote places at times and I am never unarmed.
This young man was armed also, but paid the ultimate price..

These kinds of people, no matter where you are, just need an excuse. Reasons for killing you include not having any money to not having enough.
No one can be wrong that often so it has to be deliberate.

So, so sad. The young man may have very well saved the life of his girlfriend while sacrificing his own. Sometimes just "having a gun" is not enough to save your life. Seek qualified training if you choose to exercise your right to carry and then TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN, so that you can capitalize on every tactical advantage in the event that you must protect yourself or a loved one from death or great bodily harm.

That is very true. Bad people are gonna be bad people. In the wilderness, big cities and everywhere in between.

Prayers for the survivor and the deceased's family.
Carry any chance you can and practice, practice, practice.
