In 1973 I made it into the Maryland State Police. I had also applied as an air traffic controller and got that job offer a few weeks later, and I went with the ATC job. MSP starting pay, as I recall was 8800$. ATC paid 16K. No brainer. I often look back at how God must have been looking out for me. I don't think I would have done better scraping bodies off the highway and wrestling drunks. Glad somebody is doing it though.

Retired after 34 years in LEO. State, County, City and College. You need a special mindset to be a good cop. That said, after 20+ autopsies including two exhumations, three infants, investigating fatal shootings, stabbings, cars accidents, fatal arson and accidental fires, I might be a little "touched". We retiree's joke that all of us have to be a little "off" and probably have a some PTSD.
I attribute my remaining sanity to good non-police friends, faith, and my upbringing.
When I worked at the college, the students would ask why I didn't carry a TASER. I always replied that I would want to use it too often as I smiled at them.

Did 13 years in wildlife law enforcement…

Late nights, flying solo, middle of nowhere, miles from backup… every stop was dealing with armed and often ‘enhanced’ folks.

City/County LEOs always called us insane for dealing with situations like that… I always responded that THEY were the crazy ones.

I had the advantage of knowing that each of my stops were a potential gunfight; and I treated them as such…

Those poor bastards with PD & Sheriff’s Dept. never knew what they were walking into on any given call.

Regardless; I’m not sure I would have the temperament required to do the job today… my hat’s off to all those who do.

My grandson is a fireman. He says that as an EMT and firemen that it is more like being a cop that doesn’t carry a gun. A few weeks ago they were putting out a house fire and the arsonist that started the fire on his grandmothers house, shot at them. He did not want them to put the fire out. Luckily a policeman on the scene found him and returned fire. Then my grandson had to keep the loony arsonist alive until the ambulance arrived. Most people have no idea what our first responders have to go through. They are the ones that keep our thin veneere of civilization in tact.

I did 35 years and retired four years ago. Things are different since I retired and don't look as fun. But I loved it while I was there! So true Jaredn!

While waiting for my ship to return to port I was assigned shore patrol duty since I was a petty officer. they gave me a .45 and billy club. I felt like a total idiot and probably looked like one too. I escorted sailors & marines to and from lock up to chow and various medical appointments. They told me if anyone ran not to shoot them. I absolutely hated it. Worst duty I ever had.

    Traffic cop maybe.....nah

I do IT for a local municipality. Years ago I was sitting in a patrol car on the police lot working on a computer problem, the assistant chief walked by and said to me "you look good behind the wheel of that cruiser, you should go to the academy", to which I responded "oh, you wouldn't want me to be one of your officers because you'd be spending a lot of timing explaining to news reporters why I thumped someone on the head again".
