    Hours on motor

So I decided to get a new to me right a few weeks ago. My old boat still has a carved motor that has a drinking problem. So in my search I found a well cared for rig with a 225 pro xs . I was ready to pull the trigger until they went over the report on the motor. Compression is good and all services have been done. The downfall is 425 hours on the motor. Should I be worried about that or just go ahead with the deal or keep shopping? I don't want to get into something that I will regret.

Nothing is guaranteed of course but for what it's worth, I bought a boat in 2005 with a 2001 Optimax on it and had no idea how many hours it had at time of purchase. I had reeds replaced probably around 2010, lower unit in 2017 with 772 hours on the motor. It finallly blew in September of 2020 with 1072 hours on it.

My G2 will give a breakdown of the number of hours spent at certain RPM levels. Does the report indicate that? It would be helpful to see the breakdown.

How old is it? 400 does not sound like much to me.

I'd rather have a 10 year old rig with 425hrs that has been maintained than the same boat with 40hrs. Sitting idle is not good for a motor or most things that feed/control it.

If it has been maintained, IE annual maintenance, and your mechanic gives it an ok go for it.

100 Hrs/year isn't uncommon on a southern motor and if it checks out you should be fine.

Merc dealer can plug the XS into their diagnostic system and give you a comprehensive history readout of the engine.

425 hours is like ~15,000 miles on a car.

Salesman just told me from the service report. The dealer is 6hrs away so I have only seen
What the sales guy has sent. Most all the dealers close to me deal with Yamaha stuff. So that's
    another concern.

My 07 Pro Xs has 510 hours on it. It’s been well maintained by me and the previous owners.

THAT would be my biggest concern. They all break eventually and I want to have someone a reasonable distance from me that I have confidence in to repair it without getting screwed.

Good advice here on all responses.
My 250 ProXS just blew at 497 but I honestly think this is an exception to the rule for most part.
After being on the bad end of this, my concerns with the motor you’re looking at would be compressor, fuel rails / injectors and if the thermostats, poppet valve and compressor strainer were maintained.
bot sure how you’d really determine these but if all the items, the compressor would be of concern as it approaches 500 hours.

So my opinion is commercial rigs go many more hours then our weekend warrior rigs. 400 hours is not much considering the engine. The statement about the hours and the compressor are right on target as is needing to replace the vanes right about this same time line. If compression checks out and the guy has annual service records, it’s probably going to be just fine. Surprisingly a lot of people don’t do servicing as they should, and that leads to premature engine failure. The 225 opti is a great engine. I actually prefer it to my 250 opti as fuel economy was so much better and I only gained a few mph by comparison.

Set aside $10K for a new Powerhead. Still way ahead of buying new. Bought my boat with a 250 ProXS with 150 hours and blew the powerhead the second year I owned it. They are made to run and not sit. It’s a crap shoot.

How many hours do you think your truck motor has on it?

My powerhead on my 2015 250 ProXS blew up at 200 hours so you never know when it will happen.
