Tired of buying seat pedestals that fail. How to hold them up.

As the title says I keep buying Springfield pedestals and they fail in 6-9 months and won’t stay extended. Any suggestions on how to lock it in the extended position? Thought about a hose clamp on the shaft so it can’t go down.

The manual models that hold the adjustment with pins instead of pneumatics is the way to go. they will last decades.

For this reason I switched to a pinned manual version. I also took the old gas cylinder model and converted it to a pinned model by extending it to some set heights and drilling holes in the cylinder that I could insert a pin into.

After seeing a response on here last year I’ve been using a bicycle seat post clamp on my seat on the bow. Something like this one. Comes in various sizes so you would need to match up with diameter of seat post.

Drill a hole in the side and screw a pin or screw in.

Seems like a good idea for having the most selections for height adjustment but how do you get it over/ around the cylinder without completely tearing one end off.

I had a manual post for a short time. It whistled very loud as I would run to another spot.
Other people would always turn to look when I went by.

If that is you in the avatar the whistle was not coming from your seat and was also not why they were looking at you.

Looks like the clamp that holds the seats up on my granddaughters bicycles.

I usually buy the swivel-eze model and they seem to last a long time. At least 3-4 years or longer and that’s with heavy use. I always retract the pedestal fully before taking it off the boat. I’ve had several of them over the last 20+ years on different boats. I think I had one fail in a year but the others have been totally great.

My only suggestion would be to make sure that you extend and retract the seat every trip or two, to keep the seals in good condition.

I've had a post on my Allison for 6 years and it really don't get used much but a few times a year it gets extended and retracted and it's still working fine. My jon boat has the same pedestal, two years and doing fine.
The next thing would be to get the pin type that others have mentioned.

Yeah, the pedestsl seat posts are an item that could be improved a lot. I use two radiator hose clamps on my back one, you can adjust with a 5/16", 8mm. or a screwdriver.
