Pistol Grip Rod

Best of both worlds was the Lew's Pistol Plus grip that came on Lew's Laser rods in the 1990's. It was a long handled rod, but had a bump behind the trigger. Essentially, it was a pistol grip with a long handle behind it. It is my favorite handle style by far, having all the advantages of a pistol grip and a long handled rod.

The old black diamond pattern handled Lew's! I've got 15 of those rods with round Abu 4500C's on them in my storage unit. They were all in the rod box of my dad's boat when he passed away. I never really cared for the hump in the handle of those rods but my dad really liked them. My sisters and I have a storage unit full of my mom and dad's stuff since they have both passed away. We intend to sell it all someday, but I'll always hang onto dad's old fish'n stuff.

No thanks … especially trying to horse one out of pads or hydrilla that’s 5-6 X the normal size of Ohio River fish.

Man, that used to be all I had on my bait casters, totally forgot about them until I saw this.
Somewhere many years ago went back to spin rods/reels and have never looked back.

Hank loves those pistol grips. Well he can sure have all of them.

I have three old All Star pistol grips. They are ideal for jerkbait fishing. no rod tips hitting the water and no handles hitting my forearm or side. I still think I make more accurate casts with a longer handle but for jerkbaits there's nothing better.

I won two pistol grip rods back in the day. They were a Skyline graphite and lew's speed stick. Oh yeah and a Ray Jefferson depth finder. The tournament was a 1978 S.C. state federation, Long ago and still chasing um by the grace of God.

C’mon dude. We could slap an Abu 5500 on a pistol grip rod, string it up with 20 Big Game mono, paint our name on our motors, and then drive around the lake telling everyone that FF sonar is useless because we won a Bass club tournament one time from 2’ water on a spinnerbait!!!

Tried them, don't like them. The longer handle rods are better in almost every way.

One of my fishing buddies liked pistol grip rods, but he often threw them out into the lake by accident. I tried a few but IMO, they only work if you cast and switch the rod into the other hand. Otherwise, you've got almost zero leverage to set the hook.

Recently, I made the mistake of buying a frog. Not having a frog rod made me try it on my old but nearly unused 7'6" MH Shimano Speedmaster flipping stick. I'm always amazed at how accurate I can cast with it. IMO, if you can't cast accurately, your rod is too stiff for the bait you're trying to throw.

I still use my old Cotton Cordel fiberglass pistol grip for spinner baits and jerk baits. that rod has to be40 years old.

Zebco Sportfisher boron from K-Mart with a Shimano Bantam Mag Plus from @ 1985. This one has 6# mono and is a white bass machine. Also throw baits for walleye in the shallows with it.
