How many on here pull a travel trailer with a 1/2 ton

I知 looking at travel trailers to tow with a half ton. Granted I will be using a WD type hitch. What weight is too much? I知 looking at one that weighs 6000 dry. However I知 not buying it to tow all over the country. Just to move to a lake 125 miles away and leave for the season then home for winter. Thanks in advance for the help and suggestions.

I no longer have my TT but did tow with my truck. I have a 2014 F150 supercrew 4X4 with 3.5 ecoboost and max tow package. With that setup I had no problem pulling my 9,000# 35' TT using a Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch. In addition to weight distribution it also is designed to prevent sway. https://www.equalizerhitch.com/how-equalizer-works/

Ignore the dry weight of the TT, it's meaningless. For planning base it off of the max gross weight (trailer + cargo). Check your trucks true tow rating and your receiver hitch rating. The receiver hitch on my truck was rated at 600# without weight distribution and 1200# with weight distribution.

Tongue weight is important since it eats into your cargo (not towing) capacity. Most 1/2 ton trucks are rated for 1300-1800 # of cargo capacity. Without keeping that in mind it's easy for some to exceed their cargo capacity by the time you add family in the cab and toys in the bed.

What half ton do you have? If it's a 6.2 GM, 5.7 Tundra, Hemi Ram, 5.6 Titan, or a 5.0 or 6.2 F150 you should have no trouble, anything less don't expect it to last as long.

Sorry, I forgot to add that the tow unit is a 2016 Ram 1500 with the hemi and 3.92 rear gear.

I have a 2020 F-150 with a 3.5 ecoboost and the max tow package and tow our Wind River with a dry weight of 7,500 # with no issues. I would think you would have no issues considering you have the 3.92 gears.

I'm sure you'll have no problem pulling it, just make sure the trailer brakes are in good working order.

Terrain will make a difference as well. Towing on flat ground is a whole lot easier then up and down switchbacks.

The towing capacity listed by manufacturers are based on cooling capacity. "They" match the rest of the vehicle, suspension, brakes, ect to that. I have no doubt your Ram is rated high enough for the trailer you mentioned. I tow a 24 foot, 6500 pound travel trailer with my 5.6 Titan all the time. If you're towing on steep grades just take your time. Going up and down.

Every truck is different based on options, find the rating for your specific truck on the driver door jam.

Towed a 5500 lb trailer with a 2014 5.3 3:42 4x4for 5 years.Pulled it fine till it got hot.Trans temp spiked every summer on hills.Traded that truck at 50,000 miles for a 6.6 Duramax and couldnt be happier.Gets better mpg towing or empty.Exhaust brake is awesome on down hills. Now towing a 8500 lb trailer and get around 12 mpg towing it.Most 1/2 tons dont have a big enough fuel tank for a tow rig .

I used to tow our Ameri lite 255 BH (29 foot) with a 2005 Nissan Titan LE Crew Cab 4x4 that I had bought new with only 0.4 miles on it. When the Titans first came out in 2004, there were significant problems with rear differential issues. 2005 brought the "finned" diff cover to dissipate heat. I had a friend that was a mechanic at a local Ford dealership change out my oil pan to an extra large "finned" pan, holding an extra 1 1/2 quarts of oil. The Titans "tow package" featured a small external transmission cooler mounted by the radiatior, in addition to running the transmission line through the radiator to use it as another cooler. I had a friend at a transmission shop re-route the line out of the radiator and added a larger, second external transmission cooler. That was in 2012.
When I finally decided to trade up in 2018, that Titan had 252,000 miles and never a rear differential problem. Just know what the recommended weights are for your truck as you have it set up (engine, trans, gear ratio), remember to use the "tow haul" mode and keep your brakes in good working condition.

Payload payload payload not tow capacity

I was shocked when I learned how out of spec my 1500 was for our small TT.

That is a very good 1/2 ton rig. You’ll have no problems. My old ‘16 5.7 / 3.92

Ford F150 with the tow package gets a 36 gallon tank, trans cooler, and upgraded hitch. I have to stop to pee more than stop for gas even with a head wind and big enclosed trailer in tow.

I pull a 27ft toy hauler with a 15 ram 2500 6.4 hemi. loaded about 10k. pulled it fine but you could tell you were shorten life of powertrain. gas mileage 5-7. I sold it and now have a 2500 ram diesel. towing experience totally changed- fuel mileage doubled towing not to mention empty. actually able to use cruise and exhaust brake is real deal. what I've learn over the years anything consistently pulling more then 4000-5000 pds needs 3/4 ton or bigger. safer stops and drives better and designed for heavier loads.

you will be fine for your intended use. I towed a 6000 lb camper with my ram with 3.21 gears.

however, watch your payload. Don’t drive to fast.

For your intended use - no problem.
