Splash well Cover on a Z520C? Help!

Ok I need to work on my Power Pole pumps and was wondering if the rectangle plastic in the splash well on my 2016 Z 520 is covering a hole? I took the screws out but could not move the plastic. I know on my old 5 series boat the round circle would open up to provide access. Help! Thanks Greg

Looks the same as my 2018. Cover could be RTV'd or siliconed down.... may have to gently pry it up.

There is a gasket underneath the cover and yes there is a big rectangular hole.

You have to carefully pry it off the gasket without damaging the glass. Was not easy to do on mine.

Take a piece of scrap wood and hold it against an edge. Tap the wood with the hammer a couple times and it will break the seal loose. 2x4 works well. Just replaced one of my pumps through that access panel.

After taking off the cover do you just put it back on with the screws ? It won’t leak ?

I never had an issue with it leaking. If your concerned, a little grease around it (same stuff you use on your plug) won't hurt, but not necessary.

So you just put the splashwell cover back on using the screws and it hasn’t leaked ? You didn’t use silicone or anything around the edges ?

520C...you might be over thinking this one. There is a rubber gasket under it, but the whole point of that cover is for access. Had mine off and back on a few times to snug up jackplate bolts, replace a temp sensor, add to a Point 1, etc.

Gotchya I also have a 520c. I’ve just been hearing of people damaging the gasket while trying to take off the cover and saying that they have to seal it down with silicone and stuff so that it won’t leak after putting it back on. Or having to put a new different type of gasket underneath it. All you did was unscrew the screws and take a 2x4 to the edge of the cover and hit it with a hammer a couple times and you were able to get the cover loose that way ? Did your rubber gasket stay on the cover or on the splashwell?

I'm on my second C boat. I kind of remember using plumbers grease on the gasket of my first boat (2013), but never have since or on my new boat. Every time I have removed the cover, the rubber gasket has stayed fixed to the plastic cover. I have not had any issues. So back to my earlier comment, you can always go back and add a small amount of grease, like the stuff you use on your drain plug, if it leaks. Has not been an issue for me and I would be worried that using silicone would make it really difficult to remove the next time.

When you reinstall I would make sure that seal is in good shape, or buy some thin weatherstripping or use silicone. . And it is very easy to strip the threaded holes back there so don’t over tighten. But if you do not a huge deal, just upsize the screw. When I bought my 520 used, it was getting a bunch of water under that plate because it was not sealed properly.

I would avoid using silicone. Use a polysulfide or polyurethane sealer. Silicone leaves a film and makes it nearly impossible to reseal after it loosens. 3-M 4200 is a great polyurethane sealer and it's made for marine applications. There many others that will also perform well.

This to remove, and a silicone sealant when re-installing.
