Teleflex Rack and Pinion steering system???

Teleflex Rack and Pinion steering system???

I have attached a picture of what parts I have from my 1983 Champion 168. I know I still need the rack and pinion steering cable, what other parts do I need. My boat was stripped of almost everything, Maybe a new and updated steering system is in order. Seaside now manufactures Teleflex. Thanks for your opinions.

Go to ebay and get a no feedback or rotary setup, get it all, helm, cables, wheel, the whole kit.

It's going to be really hard dinking around trying to find parts on a 35 year old system.

^^ What he said. Get a No Feedback whole kit. If you are 150hp or over, get the (2) cable kit. Did I say get the whole kit?

Even Wally World will ship it to you. Here's a link to the single.

This is what me and dad put in 3 different boats and all work great, you just have to figure out how long of cables you need

And NEVER put grease on your new cables. Lithium, light oil or silicone, never grease. Why? Grease dries out and packs up in the cable, and eventually will lock up.

Thanks Pat and Jason, you both agree on system and I'm guessing Pat the 168 Champ will need a 14 footer. I will measure.

I don't remember what I put in my 168. Your current cables should be printed with a size, and read the instructions on measuring, it's not what you think it should be.

I just converted a 168 for a customer from Teleflex to Hydraulic the cables were 12' bad thing is the numbers are on the middle of the cable sheath so you'll need to pull them. Measuring is easy.

Thanks Fred & Pat. I have no cables and have read instructions on measuring. I will be using a 1985, 150hp Evinrude that's in excellent condition. Remember my call name, I have been an Evinrude man all my life and maybe contacting you for helpful information on maintenance. HaHa

That boat really wants a 6" rapid jack plate, so get the next size up, makes rigging on the plate a lot easier.

Yes. When you install a plate on a 168 it’s a tight turn to get the cables in.

Yes Pat is correct, the 168 I did was flat on the transom the customer didn't want to keep the old cables and I didn't want to pull the motor, so I broke out the old angle and cut them off at the motor. But new cables would have been a very tight bend. Would be a good time to install a plate like Pat mentioned.

Pat - you stated with plate its a tight turn, so one turn in the splash well and then one turn to outboard. I measured 11.34 ft making both turns so does 12' sound right. Thanks for your help
