    189 TRX owners-questions

Any of you running a 4s Merc 175 PRO XS without a Jack plate? If so, how’s it run?

also, are all compartments fully finished in fiberglass including the rear bilge area?

the one thing I don’t like about my 2008 18x2 is the unfinished rear bilge area and the starboard and port side front deck storage areas are open to the bilge area/unfinished. Was wondering if the 189 TRX is different now.

I have a 2020 189trx with a 175 4 stroke w/o a jack plate and it runs great. It will run 63.2 on a good day. I don’t overload my boat though. When it gets close to 60 it will start to chine walk pretty bad. I have a jack plate on order now. It is supposed to help with chine walk.

Thanks soulloud. Mine also doesn’t have a jackplate, but I’ve got the older 2s PRO XS 175. It runs 61-63 mph and yes it chinewalks at around 58/59 mph. But I’ve had the boat now for 10 years, so I can manage the chinewalk where it’s a non-issue. That jackplate should help reduce it for your boat too.

can you tell me about the compartments? Are they fully finished and not open to the bilge area?

I have the 18 TRX. I have the 6 inch manual jack plate, chine walk is nonexistent until 66 or 67 mph and it is manageable. since the hulls are the same, I would think a jack plate would eliminate your chine walk. I can let go of my steering wheel at 62 mph.

I have the same rig, what prop came with yours? Mine came with the 24" Tempest and could only turn 5100 rpm's when I got it. I dropped down to a 21" to get the rpm's up close to 6000 so I break it in properly. I to have a jackplate on order and I know I'll have to re-prop once I get it on.

Doprofs58- not sure if you were referring to me and my boat but I run a Tempest 23P on my 18x2 with my older 2-stroke Merc 175 PROXS.

If you don’t mind me asking what is your prop to pad?

2.5”, but i’m going to lower it about a quarter inch because I did not really see any improvement once I went above 2.75 inches, but seems to slip a little out of the hole at 2.5 inches. Water pressure is good on my boat. If you get above 3 inches be sure you watch your water pressure. Sweet spot on my set up is between 2.5 and 2.75 inches PTP.
