    Sulfur smell when charging

Getting a sulfur smell when charging. Interstate batteries. Minnesota Kota MK460D charger. Check water levels often. Only been out twice in the last month. Notice the smell both times. Unplugged charger but batteries weren't at full charge. Boat hadn't been used since September. Did charge batteries once a month through the winter. This last time 3 batteries were close to full charge. The 4th was only at 11.1 volts. Charger was on about 7 hours. Not sure if issue with charger or battery.

Probably a shorted cell in the one that measures 11.1V.

STOP CHARGING! That battery is done and may just go pop.

Hope the low one is your starting battery, so you don't have to mix or replace one of the 36 volt batteries.

Had one of these for several years. I have used it more on other folk's batteries than my own. Handy when you don't want to remove the battery from the boat to take it inside a shop to have it load tested.

The low one is one of the trolling batteries. How do I make sure that's the battery causing the odor? This is the 4th season I've owned the boat. I've had a battery issue every year in the spring. Usually have to replace one for not charging. This will be the 4th. Not sure if the one that's low is one I've already replaced. Was thinking about switching batteries to AGMs. Lithium not in the budget. Going to look into the load tester. Pulling a battery is a pain.

Check the dates for the age of the batteries unless you already know them.

Cheap 100 amp load tester from Harbor Freight. The toggle switch eventually melted on mine so I put a heavy disconnect switch in its place. When you load test have the tops off if it is not a sealed battery and bubbles will appear in a bad cell. You can just turn everything on and load test it that way also. A clue is shine a flashlight in the cell and a bad one will usually look 'dirty'.

When you changed one battery at a time you compounded your problem. Standard procedure is to change all batteries in a series circuit at the same time with batteries of the same type and age. If you can afford to. Sam's Club has some great deals on batteries. I bought two trollers and a main this year.
