    Question Power Poles on Z7

I just got my 8Ft Power Poles in for my Z7. Im trying to decide if I should put them on or let my Dealer put them on. I consider myself mechanically inclined. I don't have jack plate and I have the brackets that go between the motor and transom. How hard are the Poles and Pumps to Install? How long does it take?

Thanks for your Input and Advice!!

You will need something to hold the engine in the air when you unbolt it. There is a guy on here that said he did it without any lifting aids, but I wouldnt do it. It could break the skeg on the lower unit if you dont get lucky.

Yea I would have to borrow a lift. I'm not going to take the chance either. I'm really leaning on taking it to dealer. They said it would take 3.5 hours @$100 hr and I would have to leave it with them about a week. Also it is so HOT here in Mississippi right now and fish arent bitting that well either. lol

I have a Z7 with dual power poles. No jackplate. I installed myself with help of a buddy. It took approx. 4 hours. We did not use a lift to hoist the entire motor. I attached pictures of them. If you need any help let me know. I can send a picture of the pump install if you would like.

Yes please send pictures of where you installed pumps. I was looking and it doesn't look like there are much room for 2 pumps

    Thanks,

.... your not wrong It does look nice. I was quoted $80 per hour to install it all (no J/Plate) and 1 maybe 2 hours tops. still umming and ahhing over P/Pole or Talon thou.

its easy to install the PPs, the mounts in your case will be tough with no JP. If u had a JP it becomes easy.

While on this subject, I have a Z-7 I plan to put a pole on soon. It has a 6" plate. What size offset are y'all using for the mounts?

Dual pumps in the Z-9 are mounted on the "trap door" in the bilge. Not sure if a 7 is the same configuration.

    Ledge n,
What are your concerns between PP vs Talon?
If you're talking purely $ investment, Talon is the way to go. You can install it yourself in a fraction of the time it takes to rig a PP, with more user friendly features built right in. I see MinnKota now has a 12' Talon for about the same $ as a 10' PP Blade too. And MinnKota has awesome customer service too. I've never had a problem with mine, and I know MinnKota will stand behind their products. I think Talon comes with a 5 year limited warranty with a lifetime warranty on the spike too. Tough to go wrong in my opinion.

Sorry guys. I have been crazy busy this week. I will get the pictures tonight when I get home of my Z7 with no jackplate setup. Promise this time. I also installed a switch on them so they don't draw on the battery when the boat is not on the water.

gpbfishman, I have no concerns really I am looking at pure cost. Why Costs? coz Minn Kota do not sell talons in Australia despite demand. I have spoke to Aus and US Minn Kota and no go "yet". I have been talking to a site sponsor about sending one over for me, but the 3 major couriers want $600 + Aus customs taxes of about $300. certainly a major factor. having said that, with all those extra cost it is still comparable to the Power pole price purchased here in Aus land. then we talk warranty. it wold be $600 + taxes to send it back each way. at the end of the day they are both excellent products and happy to have either, but I would prefer a talon. if any one has a better idea or a way to get one to Australia, I am all ears. I have Power Poles, but I'm not interested in joining the debate of one versus the other. I just want to weigh in on 1 part of the equation.... JL Marine (Power Pole parent) has TOP NOTCH CUSTOMER SERVICE. They have helped me more than once, often at their cost and with expedited service! TOP NOTCH. I have not used MinnKota so I cannot speak to their customer service, sounds like its good also. Seems like this should not factor in to this choice.

Here are the pictures of the pumps on my Z7 it is tight but it works.

And by the way the dual axle on the Z7 is awesome. I can not imagine pulling it without to be honest.
