    Distinquishing Tempest Prop Series

I purchased a used Tempest 24” prop about a year ago and finally decided to give it a try this past Monday. I had pvs plug and two open pvs plugs. The hole shot was a little slower compared to the factory equipped 21” Tempest prop. Once on plane and out of a narrow channel near the ramp, I opened it up. Vessel view was indicating 6,000 rpm’s at 46 mph. I have the Mercury SSR hub and everything is assembled correctly. In comparison I am seeing 55-56 mph with the Tempest 21” prop at 6,100 rpm’s. My boat is a Ranger Z185 with a 4 stroke Mercury 150 Pro-XS. After researching it appears I could have a 46 series Tempest prop. The Tempest 24” appears to be in perfect condition with no dings visible. The prop has the three PVS holes and looks identical the to 21” Tempest. The only number on the 24” is 48-825872 24p. Is there anyway to tell a 46 series from a 47 before I purchase another prop? The prop slip calculator indicates the 24” is at 30%slippage while the 21” is right at 4%. I feel the need to go up in size since the 56mph run on the 21” was with two people and a full load the week prior to testing the 24” prop on the same lake with the exact same weather conditions.

24 seems like a lot of prop for that setup. With what you were running with the 21 I wouldn't have gone more than a 22p.

A lot of the 150 4s Mercury engines came with a 22” Tempest on the Z185 package. The ProXS 150 4 stroke has the 2.08 gear ratio compared to the 1.92 ratio on the standard 4s. I am over 100 rpms outside the maximum rated RPM range with a 3/4 tank of fuel, full load of tackle, a cooler full of drinks with a bag of ice and my adult daughter and my 225lb carcass. The 21” Tempest is perfect until WOT and just me in the boat with significantly less plunder. I am torn between a Bravo 1 fs 23”-24” and trying a Tempest 23” prop.
