I bought one of the X2 AGM batteries from Batteries Plus today. The model number is SL131AGMDPM. The salesman told me the battery needs to be charged with at least 25 amps 2-4 times a year. My onboard charger is a 4 bank and it doesn't give that much amps to any battery while charging. My question is, how do I charge and maintain this new battery? Should I get a 2nd onboard charger for just this battery? I went with this battery because my previous AGM only had 800CCA and was not holding up well with my electronics usage.

It will get charged with 25 amps or more every time you are running the motor at a decent speed.

I've been using an AGM as main since 2012. When I park my boat, I plug power cord in for my 10amp NOCO 3 bank on board charger and it stays that way until I use the boat again. My original AGM, a Sears PM-1 purchased in 2012, still passes a load test.

Is the Lithium battery disclaimer on the OP still valid today? Ionic states they have no issues with Mercury motors these days.

Still valid. Mercury has not approved the use of Lithium batteries for any of their engines, as of this date. They specifically require Lead-Acid or AGM batteries (depending on the engine application).

The full throttle 31agm meets all of the requirements and because of the plate design is pretty stout so no plate cracking/separation or anything in rough water

It's a very strange use of the word: require.

Yes, you're correct. But that's what specifications are, right?

Despite the massive amount of internet misinformation, Mercury's Service Bulletin (just like every other bulletin) has a section that is marked:

    CORRECTION:

Approves is strange as well since that implies disapproval. They need better lawyers

Or perhaps folks just need to listen to the folks that designed the engine...??? I got the biggest kick out of watching someone try to read the bulletin on youtube (it's a no-no, but still... he couldn't read it because he wouldn't READ the words actually printed on the page).

I think the bulletin was very clear, and that's the only reason I question require and approve. No voiding of warranty, but a reservation of rights if caused by.

Looking for some help here... searched high and low and can't seem to find a straight answer. Looking for a cranking battery for a 2000 mercury 225 EFI - serial number OT165957. It will also be powering 2 helix 10s and a helix 12 along with radio, pumps, lights etc... I've read enough on here to see there is some concern with using an AGM cranking battery for these era engines due to it using stator to re-charge battery instead of alternator - is that correct?

What version is my engine - stator or alternator?

Can I use an AGM for cranking/electronics with my motor?

Pull the cowl and look, is there a belt from the flywheel to an alternator? If yes, you can use an AGM, if no belt you have a stator style charging system and cannot use an AGM.

Your engine serial number used a traditional, belt-driven alternator.

AGM battery is fine for use with this engine, as is a traditional lead-acid WET CELL battery.

Out of these 2 batteries (Odyseey or X2), which would you choose? I have a Sears PM1 now since 2015 and although it seems to be fine I want to replace just in case.

Thank you for all your information, this forum wouldn't be the same without you!

I'd probably go with the Odyssey if it's readily available.

I'd choose an Odyssey or Northstar based on some comments here about after sale support on X2s (could just be a local "thing"). My PM-1 is still in use just not in my boat.
