Re: How many of the Champ family members are using the new fu ... (bigfish1259)

I have a HDS 5 in dash on 190 CX,added Structure scan last spring..Absolutely love it ,best money I ever spent on electronics..When I use side scan, I just use either side scan set on 60 ft.(switch left or right side, depending on which bank Im fishingt.Have benefefit of a large screen without the expense .Also it fits in dash.I dont use it much fishing shallow banks, but ledges and structure, you'll wonder how you ever fished without it.

I can see a sort of elliptical shape there with not much density.</td></tr></table>

On the down imagine side there is only a 35ft depth set. On the side image it is set to 120ft. So the baot ball will look approx 5 times smaller. So it will not be as visible.

Butch, get the 898 and don't winterize that ChamP. I'll put you on some of the most fun fall smallie fishing 20 min from your house. It is just starting to get decent and will get real good through Dec.

Re: How many of the Champ family members are using the new fu ... (bassin butch)

I put a 798 on my console. I love it. That being said, my buddy has an 898 on bow and 998 at console. Can you see stuff more easily on his?.....yes. Is it worth the extra money for the bigger unit?.....not to me. The 898 is a better value if you want a bigger screen. I think the screen on the 898 and 998 are close to identical in size but, the 898 is several hundred dollars less in price.

Have I caught more fish? I can't really say but, I sure have learned a lot more about the lakes and rivers I fish. One of the neatest things is being able to record over an area and then go back and play the recording while making changes in your settings. I love palying and learning on mine, just wish I had more time to use it. I have not even scratched the surface of what I think I can learn from this thing.

To me it shines most in eliminating non productive water quickly.

Get one....you will not regret it.

Re: How many of the Champ family members are using the new fu ... (bassin butch)

I have 2 Humminbird 899C Si's on my boat. I have buddy's with both Lowrance and Humminbird and that helped me make my decision. For me, the Humminbird was the right decision. I love the Side Scan and Down Imaging. I like to fish Clear Lake and there's a lot of docks on this lake. With the Side Scan I was able to find structure under the docks that I never knew was there and fish were on it. Basically the sweet spot.

With Down Imaging, it's very clear what you are looking at. I fish deep reservoirs also and I've been able to find things with my HB that I never knew was there in areas I've fished for years.

Both HB and Lowrance are good products, I chose the HB after being able to see both in action on the water.

You hit the nail on the head here...ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

Additionally, I went the the 898 over the 998 based on cost for the size of the screen...looking back I wouldn't have done that. Another difference between the 898 vs. 998 is that the 998 has a faster processor.

How the heck did this old post get back up on top

Looks like I'm out numbered by the Bird fans -- But can you control, playback and listen to your I-Pod, I-phone, USB memory stick from your Bird while scanning the lake bottom with sonar, downscan, sidescan from any networked display on the boat (I have three separate displays 8/7/5)

Now that you mention that, I thought Butch had already gone through this and had his unit mounted.

The string was bought back to life! The choice I made was a 798 with that said I havent used side nor down yet to add fish to my livewell. If I did it all over again I would have 2 597's.

Butch, stop that non-sense. You just need to get out on lakes that have depths that are over your head where you can utilize your electronics.

I apologize...I think I was the one who brought it back...

But I had ulterior motives as well...considering doing an additional off season graph upgrade on mine and was seeing where people stood.
