Re: You guys ready for your electric trucks? (Alan S)

Mike touts tax credits for his stuff. We all helped pay for it.

Meanwhile the debt clock churns along. Hope those solar panels and green buildings last long enough for our grandchildren to see the ROI.

When the better idea comes along...and it will. People will be on it like a duck on a junebug without any tax incentive.

Here's why our government wants us to go green...

    http://www.postandcourier.com/...-pays/

The only part of "going green" that I back is solar power. I personally have a solar heat system in my home and save tons of money each year. All winter long, as long as the sun is shining, my furnace doesn't kick on. My normal gas bill is under $100 per month in the winter time and this is when it's freezing outside for weeks and weeks at a time.

I want to ensure I leave as big of a carbon foot print that I can before I go.

A solar array and batteries with enough wattage to carry an all electric house (which I own), is still cost prohibitive. Plus the life span of the said array and batteries really blows the savings to heck.</td></tr></table>

wouldn't get batteries for those reasons and others but if you oversize the system a little and have it grid-tied with a net metering agreement (which is pretty standard these days) you will have virtually no bill at all........with todays prices and tax benefits the real cost of KWH will be in the 8-14cent range for the most part which is what your paying today.

Most panels have 25 year production warranty's and can last much longer, inverters have 5 and 10 year warranties and can last much longer also.......

to JohnM I didn't say we all weren't paying for them with debt, but I have nothing to do with that so all I can do is play with the cards on the table and try to do whats best for myself, partners and clients

may the first person who does not take a single deduciton or expense on their taxes cast the first stone

oh JohnM what field/source of energy has not received insane tax incentives during its life??

Touché on taking all the legal tax breaks one can, been gathering paperwork myself.

As for every sources getting tax breaks I (end user) don't see them. As a matter of fact my energy bill has several tax surcharges because it's been ruled dirty. Approximately 30% of my last several bills have been taxes or fees. Tax breaks to the producer and those to the end user are two different subjects. One is to create jobs, one is to create an artificial market. Both could be debated as wrong in the long run.

Re: You guys ready for your electric trucks? (JohnM)

What could be wrong with a little incentive for lng useage in otr trucks and incentivize cities to use nat gas in municipal vehicles? I guess that makes too much common sense. Besides natural gas is just too plentiful and too cheap to consider by Washington logic.
By the way, maybe a pipeline from Canada to Houston could be a good idea just in case the chinese run out of those windmills and solar panels and we actually need a little oil when the Iranians close the gulf of Hormuze (sp?). I guess we are just too stupid/corrupt to make windmills and solar panels and build pipelines to provide for OUR needs here in the USA. Note the SOLYNDRA debacle.
Maybe we could put more ethanol in gasoline so our fuel mileage goes down/useage of fuel goes up and our food costs continue to sky rocket. That makes sense! Yeah, so what if that Merc 250 XS I bought 2 years ago can't run on it. Now there's an idea that makes sense to Washington..
Or what about a small diesel for a LT pickup or a Tahoe. Oh I forgot..... just because the rest of the world utilizes small diesels it couldn't possibly be a good idea here.

Or maybe we should ....... Wonder what color electric truck the gov't thinks I should have? They got plug in's at Pirates Cove or Shell Beach boat landing?

By the way, Warren Buffet should just pay off our deficit instead of B*&^hing about it. He could make a good start by paying the Billion$'s the IRS says he owes instead of litigating it. THAT would be a good faith gesture......

Back to the trucks........Now what color do you think those gov't trucks will be? Can't say Olive Drab goes real well with my boat! Maybe we can all get a tax break to pay for it like "ole Mike" says in an earlier post or better yet just an out right gift for all bass fishermen or ...OK!!!....include crappie fishermen, or bream fishermen. Oh Hell!!!.... just give everybody one and no body pay for it!!! You know like "a chicken in every pot!" Now there's something everybody can vote for!

Sorry for the rant! Hope this isn't a serious thread.

Re: You guys ready for your electric trucks? (ZO6)

There was a discussion on Dodges natural gas truck coming on another site. Uncle Sugar has already put a tax in place on the "fuel" that brings it to within .31 of gas prices. When you factor in the 3,000.00 option that going to take it out of most buyers reach without tax payer incentives.

The fact we gave over 50% ownership to FIAT only makes those that want the money in the US cringe.

Sometimes I think our leadership could tear up an anvil with a rubber mallet when it comes to running a business.

in the fact that PV Solar actually isn't a bad option and with the recent price drops due to an over supply of panels and inverters you can actually produce your own electricity on site for about the same cost as the utility company is currently providing it for

and when you factor in tax incentives it is actually cheaper

small scale PV arrays actually are an interesting choice and may be an answer to controling the "demand" loads that our current infrastuture is dealing with

and as a contractor I would consider an electric truck if it fitted my needs </td></tr></table>

Solar can not compete with natural gas. The price of NG is low and will remain low for years to come.

I'm not saying that. If they get the bugs worked out of the batteries, electric will be the way to go. The torque on an electric motor is UNREAL!</td></tr></table>

Its the range on the batteries that will prevent EV's from becoming tow vehicles. And most EV's today are direct drive, you need low gears for towing.

Batteries are gonna have to get smaller, lighter, have larger capacity, and recharge much faster . And there's no indication that the battery needed is even on the horizon.

It will take years and years for technology to invent everything we need for an electric tow vehicle.

And its highly unlikely solar will ever produce enough electricity to replace our current needs for home/business uses, much less provide the huge volume needed for a transportation fuel.

Can you imagine the drain on the grid when everyone charges their vehicles overnight. At a time when the sun ain't shining and solar is down.

The problems are huge. Its unlikely that EV's will ever be anything more than an ancillary transportation choice.
